Freshman Friday - Sydney Collins

After almost a year, the Kansas State cross country team will hit the road to open the 2016 season on Friday, September 2nd in South Dakota at the Augustana Twilight. The K-State cross country team has 13 new freshmen. One of them is Sydney Collins. Sydney is coming from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. For 16 years, beginning when she was 2 years old, Sydney was a figure skater. In order to get her college degree, she decided to switch sports and become a runner. Sydney has been a runner for only three years and she competed for team Ontario at the Canadian National Championships.

Why did you choose to come to K-State?
Coach Godfrey saw me running at Nationals and he started talking to me. Running was going to get me an education, like this one here, which is awesome. When I came for a visit, I really liked it here, so I ended up just coming.

When did you start doing track and field?
I actually started in high school and I really loved it. I decided to join it outside of school, so I joined a track club. I got really competitive. I went to Canadian Nationals and ran there.

Why did you decide to switch from figure skating to track and field?
I did figure skating for a long time and I was very competitive. In figure skating, I got to a certain point where I had to decide if I wanted to go to Toronto or big places to get really good coaching. I didn’t want to give up education to keep skating, so that’s why I started running. Running was always one of my favorite things to do.

How similar are figure skating and track?
It is just the running part. Figure skaters usually don’t run this much but we had the hardest figure skating instructor so she made us run 3Ks and 5Ks. I actually loved that. I always ran with the boys because it was so fun. We also had a lot of cross training. All the training she put me through is the reason why I am here right now.

What do you like more: track and field or cross country?
I always liked track better. I used to be a 300 meter hurdler and a 400 meter dash runner. Later I started moving up to 800 meter runs and the 1500 meter run.

What do you expect that you will run at K-State?
I don’t know what event yet. I love the 800 meter and 1500 meter run, but I might even do the 3000 meter run. I am not sure what my focus will be right now, but I’m really hoping that by the end of my university career I will improve a lot and I could maybe run for Team Canada one day.

What are you majoring in?
Biochemistry. I love science. When I took chemistry in high school, it was super hard but it was so enjoyable. I am willing to work hard for it because I really enjoy it.

What would you like to accomplish while you are at K-State?
I really would like to run at the NCAA Championship. It would be cool to hit the Olympic Standard and get a Biochemistry degree. It is hard to handle both but I really want do it. Hopefully after that I can get into pharmacy school.

Sydney will compete at the Augustana Twilight on Friday. More information on the race can be found here
