Gandon Claims Golfweek Conference Challenge Victory

BURLINGTON, Iowa – Kansas State freshman men's golfer Jeremy Gandon carded an 8-under par 66 in the final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sunday at Spirit Hollow Golf Course to tie for first place at 11-under par 205. Gandon's finish helped the Wildcats finish in fourth at 12-under par 852.

“Jeremy was rock solid all week,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “He hit the ball as well as anyone I have seen in a long time. He showed tremendous poise as a freshman, and I am really happy to see him get the win.”

After starting the day in fourth place, Gandon notched four birdies and eagled No. 10 and No. 18. The freshman recorded the 31st individual championship in K-State history, while his total of 205 tied for the 10th lowest 54-hole score in school history. His final-round score of 8-under par 66 tied for the 15th lowest round in school history.

A native of Charpy, France, Gandon shared the individual win with Iowa’s Raymond Knoll.

The Wildcats had three players in the top 21 as Oscar Spolander tied for 16th with a three-day total 3-under-par 213, while Kyle Weldon tied for 21st at 1-under par 215.

“I am really proud of the entire team this week,” Robbins said. “They really played well, and it was great to see them bounce back from the disappointing last round at Duke. There is still a lot of room for improvement, but I am really pleased with where we are right now. We just have to continue to get better.”

Freshman Roland Massimino finished his first outing as a Wildcat at 5-over par 221, tying for 42nd. Matt Green rounded out the Wildcat lineup tied for 51st at 9-over par 225.

Host school Iowa earned the team victory with a total 22-under par 842. The Hawkeyes finished three shots ahead of North Carolina State and four shots ahead of third-place Idaho.

The Wildcats return to action Oct. 10-11, at the David Toms Intercollegiate held at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
