Gandon Ties for Third to Lead K-State in Season Opener

MADISON, Wis. – Kansas State sophomore men’s golfer Jeremy Gandon continued his dominant play in the final round of the Badger Invitational on Tuesday as he carded a 3-under par 69 to finish in a tie for third at University Ridge Golf Course. Gandon, who shot a 54-hole score of 6-under par 210, helped the Wildcats finish in eighth place 16-over par 880.

The Wildcats were unable to make a jump on the leaderboard in the team competition despite better play in the final round – a 1-over par 289 – as three of the five Wildcats in the scoring lineup bettered their scores from Monday.

“We shot a better score today with the perfect conditions, but we were not able to gain any ground,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “The eighth-place finish was very disappointing but we will learn and grow from this. We did not play to our potential and that is on me. Jeremy had a great tournament and Andrew (Beckler) bounced back in a big way, which is good to see.”

Gandon, a native of Charpey, France, recorded his fourth career top-five finish and best placing since the David Toms Intercollegiate last October.

Sophomore Andrew Beckler, who shot a 7-over par 79 on Monday, carded a career-low round of 3-under par 69 to finish in a tie for 38th at 7-over par 223.

Junior Trent Evans held his same standing from Monday, finishing in a tie for 34th at 9-over par 221. Evans was able to separate himself from teammate Connor Knabe, who fell out of the top 50 in the final round. Knabe began the day with a rough patch on No. 7 but was able to manage the storm and finish with a 54-hole score of 12-over par 228 to tie for 53rd.

Senior Matt Green will look to rebound in the next tournament after a 12-over par 228 finish where he tied for 53rd along with Knabe. Redshirt freshman Ben Fernandez, who competed as an individual, finished the tournament in a tie for 32nd at 10-over par 226 in his first collegiate action

The Kansas State men’s golf team will compete next in the Primland Collegiate Invitational, Sept. 26-27, at Primland Meadows GC in Meadows of Dan, Va.
