Gandon, Wildcats Move Up Leaderboard at Badger Invitational

MADISON, Wis. – Backed by another under-par round from sophomore Jeremy Gandon, the Kansas State men’s golf team was able to climb one spot on the leaderboard to eighth place during the second round of the Badger Invitational on Monday at University Ridge Golf Course. The Wildcats, who carded an 8-over par 296 on Monday, enter Tuesday’s final round with a 36-hole score of 15-over par 591, three strokes behind seventh-place North Dakota State.

After a slow start in round one on Sunday, the Wildcats made it a mission to improve in the standings but faced more adversity.

“The course played tougher today as the wind picked up,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “The guys battled, but as a team, we weren’t making many putts and couldn’t sustain any momentum.”

Gandon, who entered Monday’s second round in a tie for fifth place, recorded a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday to move into fourth at 3-under par 141. The sophomore from Charpey, France, is currently two strokes out of third place and four strokes off the lead.

“Jeremy did a good job again today and gave us another solid round,” Robbins said. “We need the other guys to step up tomorrow. If we play like we are capable of, we can have a solid finish.”

Junior Trent Evans, who pared every hole on the back nine Monday en route to a 2-over par 74, is tied for 34th at 5-over par 149. Evans is one stroke ahead of senior Connor Knabe, who remained steady despite a bogey on the 12th and 17th hole. Knabe recorded his second-straight score of 3-over par 75 and is tied for 37th.

Sophomore Andrew Beckler and senior Matt Green are both in a tie for 56 that 10-over par 154. Redshirt freshman Ben Fernandez, who is competing as an individual, finished the day with a 5-over par 77 and is currently tied for 37th at 6-over par 150.

Kansas State concludes the Badger Invitational with a shotgun start to the final round at 9:30 a.m., on Tuesday. Live scoring can be found at www.birdiefire.com, along with updates and final scores posted to www.kstatesports.com at the end of play.
