Garcia Navas Earns K-State's First Big 12 Weekly Award since 2011

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Ana Garcia Navas, with a pair of singles and doubles wins to lead No. 70 K-State to a 14-0 weekend, earned the first Big 12 Player of the Week award by a K-State tennis athlete since 2011, the conference office announced.

A native of Valencia, Spain, Garcia Navas moved up to the No. 1 position in singles last week for the first time and notched straight-set wins over Mary Meyers of Air Force (6-0, 6-2) and Mariel Ante of Drake (6-1, 6-3). The two singles victories improved her record to 5-2 in dual matches and 11-6 over the fall and spring.

In doubles, the left-handed Garcia Navas paired up with her normal partner Iva Bago as the two took down both of their opponents by scores of 6-3. Garcia Navas and Bago, competing in the No. 2 position, lead K-State with five wins in doubles action this dual season. Over the fall and spring, the two are 7-3 together.

Garcia Navas is the first Wildcat to earn the Big 12 weekly honor since two-time All-American Petra Niedermayerova on March 28, 2011. The honor is the seventh such accolade in program history, but just the second in the last 11 years.

Garcia Navas is also the first K-State freshman to win back-to-back singles matches at the No. 1 position since Niedermayerova in 2011.

The Wildcats (5-2), who moved into the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings for the first time this year on Tuesday, return to the road for their next slate of matches as they will take on No. 50 Columbia and Memphis in New York City on February 26 and 27, respectively. Columbia’s Kanika Vaidya is No. 48 in the ITA singles rankings, helping the Lions sit in the nation’s top-50.
