Wildcats of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. Fred Brown of the Kansas State men’s basketball team and Ashley Sweat of the K-State women’s basketball team are this week’s Wildcats of the Week, announced on Tuesday by the Kansas State Athletic Department. It is the second honor of the year for Sweat, while Brown is a first-time Wildcat of the Week honoree.

Fred Brown, G, So., West Palm Beach, Fla./Dwyer

Sophomore guard Fred Brown helped the Wildcats win two games within a three-day span as they defeated Idaho State on Saturday before turning around to topple Chicago State on Monday, thanks in part to Brown. The West Palm Beach, Fla., product turned in 26 points and seven rebounds against the Cougars, both career highs. Brown shot 8-for-17 from the floor, including a 4-for-10 mark from three-point range and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. He also added two assists and two steals.

The game on Monday was his second career 20-point game as he topped his previous career-best of 25 at Xavier on Dec. 31, 2007.

Against Idaho State on Saturday, Brown scored eight points and added two rebounds and three assists.

Ashley Sweat, F, Jr., McPherson, Kan./McPherson HS
Ashley Sweat pushed the Wildcats to the best start in school history, as K-State went 3-0 during the holidays. During the three games, Sweat averaged 22.3 points on a .547 field goal percentage, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals in 31.0 minutes of action. Sweat is now just 46 points from becoming the 36th member of the 1,000-point club at Kansas State.

The week-long vacation for the Wildcats did not faze Sweat, as she registered a K-State season-high 30 points on a career-high 14-of-19 shooting and also hauled in four rebounds, dished out an assist and tallied a steal in the Wildcats 74-58 win at Washington State on Dec. 28. This was the first effort of 30 points by a Wildcat since Sweat carded a career-high 31 at Wyoming on March 28, 2007. The 14 made field goals were the most since Nicole Ohlde registered 14 against Missouri on Jan. 7, 2004.

The product of McPherson, Kan., continued her hot hand in Seattle on Dec. 30 as she recorded 22 points, including 6-of-7 from the free throw line, and notched seven rebounds, three assists and a block in K-State’s 73-60 win at Washington. During a three minute stretch halfway through the second half, Sweat scored 10 straight K-State points to extend the Wildcats lead to eight.

Sweat finished out the three-game stretch with 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while recording three rebounds, three assists and two steals in just 22 minutes of action.
