OU Coach Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Capel

Opening statement...

“I’m really proud of our guys for winning on the road in a very tough environment. K-State’s environment is great for college basketball. You have to commend Kansas State’s fans and students for coming out and supporting their basketball team. This is a good team that we beat; I thought we did a tremendous job defensively. They have been averaging over 80 points a game and we held them to 53 (points). We switched our defense up a little bit; we did some different things and were able to force some turnovers. I can’t speak for Kansas State, but I thought it was a pretty ugly game offensively, but fortunately for us we were able to finish some plays and Blake (Griffin) was tremendous. It feels really good to get this win, it is the first time for an Oklahoma men’s basketball team to win on the road in the Big 12 in the north in while.”

On being able to play 1-3-1 zone for the first time this season...

“It is something we have done in the past. We hadn’t done it this year; we didn’t start practicing it until Wednesday. Going into to conference play we need to be able have different looks. We want to get better as a basketball team. We thought this is something we could do because it is something we have done in the past. We thought it could help us out and it certainly helped us out today.”

On how important the victory was...

“It was big. Kansas State really had control of the game and had a couple of chances there where it could have really gotten away from us, but we were able to close it out. We did a good job on defense; we were able to switch to a 1-3-1 zone defense. We were able to get some stops and we were able to rebound the ball, which allowed us to get out in transition and make some easy baskets. Both teams are good defensively, so any time you get a chance to make easy baskets, you want to take advantage of it. We were able to take advantage of some and get the ball to Blake (Griffin) in certain spots and he was able to make some plays.”
