Kansas State Player Quotes
Forward Marlies Gibson
On never losing to KU at home in her career...
“It means a lot definitely. It is a Big 12 opponent and to come in and compete as a team and do well enough to win it definitely means a lot to all of us.”
Guard Shalee Lehning
On playing KU for the first game in the Big 12 season...
“It is kind of exciting to think about that really. We didn’t try to think about last year too much. Coming into this game we have a lot of respect for KU and we brought to the floor tonight what we needed to win the game. No matter what happened last year I figured they would be gunning for us just like every year just because of the in-state rivalry. It was a big win for us.”
On the save out of bounds towards the end of the game...
“When I saw her throw it I thought that I could get to the ball. As the ball kept going I was wishing she would have lofted it a little more but I was just happy I got there. It was an amazing play by Nelson (Kelsey) to even have the thought to throw it up and give it a chance for us to make a play. I always tell them to give me a chance and I will go get it and she did. It was a great hustle play by her.”
On her assists...
“I got to give credit to my posts, they are setting great screens. That is the thing about this team, if you try to stop one person then we have other weapons that will get you. They (KU) were opening the lane for me to drive by then helping off and I have great shooters on the outside that were knocking them down like they always do. If the defense doesn’t help off then I can still shoot of dish off to a post.”
Guard Danielle Zanotti
On playing defense against Danielle McCray...
“It was not an individual performance on defense tonight. It was a team effort for sure. We knew that KU was a great team. They have great athletes in McCray (Danielle) and Morris (Sade) and they have big bodies inside. We knew it wasn’t about putting one person on McCray and stopping her. We had to defend her all over the floor by the whole team. I know even though she may have struggled statistically that next time we play her she will come back strong the next game.”
Forward Ashley Sweat
On guarding Krysten Boogaard...“Marlise was guarding her most of the game and she (Gibson) is such an intimidating factor with her ability to block shots. I think it is like what Danielle (Zanotti) said about guarding McCray (Danielle), it was all about team defense. We had great scouts and great coaches that prepare us so well for our opponents. I think the thing with Boogaard is that it is all about team defense.”
