Wildcats of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. Denis Clemente of the Kansas State men’s basketball team and Shalee Lehning of the K-State women’s basketball team are this week’s Wildcats of the Week, announced Tuesday morning by the Kansas State Athletic Department. Clemente is a first-time honoree, while it is Lehning’s third honor of the season, tying Lauren Mathewson and Rita Liliom of the K-State volleyball team for the most during the athletic year.

Male

Denis Clemente, G, Jr., Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Univ. of Miami

Junior guard Denis Clemente led the Wildcats with 18 points on Saturday against Oklahoma on 6-of-15 shooting, including a 2-for-6 mark from three-point range and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico, native also tallied five rebounds, three assists and one steal.

A transfer from Miami, Clemente is averaging 12.6 points in 14 games this season, the second most on the team. Furthermore, Clemente is shooting a team-best 78.8-percent from the free-throw line.

Shalee Lehning, G, Sr., Sublette, Kan./Sublette HS

Shalee Lehning led the Big 12’s final undefeated team to its 14th straight win and extended the best start in school history with a 72-39 win over rival Kansas on Saturday night. Lehning, the NCAA Division I-leader in assists, finished the contest with her 17th career double-double and her fourth of the season with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, a game-high 10 assists, a team-high six rebounds and a steal.

On the back of Lehning’s guidance, the Wildcats shot 50.8 percent from the field and committed only eight turnovers. The double-figure assist effort by the preseason Wooden Award candidate was her eighth of the season and the 20th of her career.

With her rebounding and passing effort on Saturday, Lehning became the fifth player in school history to haul in 800 rebounds for a career (804) and became the fifth player in Big 12 history to reach the 700 assist plateau (700).
