Iowa State Quotes

Head Coach Bill Fennelly

On tonight’s game plan...

“Obviously in the game plan we were going to let (Shalee) Lehning shoot it. She is 4-21 on the season. She is really good at taking the ball to the basket. She made it [three-pointer] and it was three to nothing. The game wasn’t over; it was only the first play of the game. We came down and scored on the very next possession, and then proceeded to miss some shots. Sometimes you’ve just got to keep guarding to stay in the game. Sometimes you have to keep scoring. We weren’t guarding very well and we had a couple chances around the basket that might have stopped it [K-State’s run] a little bit. But from start to finish there weren’t very many positives. K-State is a good team, they play very hard, and they defend well and are very good in this building. They are in first place for a reason and they have earned that right.”

On Iowa State’s play from a large deficit...

“They shot the ball very well and everyone that came in got a chance to make it and we’ve all been around basketball long enough. It’s a lot easier to make a three when you’re up 25 points. There is no pressure and they got some good looks at it. We had some people in the game that don’t normally play. We were trying to rest some people when the game got out of hand and we obviously got beat badly. But I didn’t want to keep throwing people out there because we have a long season ahead of us. We have a limited bench so we were going to save some legs if we could. They shot the ball great and they had some open looks and made them.”

On his team’s challenge in upcoming games...

“The first we have to focus on is our understanding of the effort that it takes to even be in the game. The challenge is that we played as hard as we could play against Nebraska and still lost. What we have to figure out is how hard you have to play to have a chance to win the game. I don’t care if you’re playing home or away, whatever, right now we are struggling with that a bit. Some of our older kids that have been through this before, we need them to contribute a bit more to get through the rough spots and not have to rely on all the inexperience we have. We can’t change it, what we have to do now get ready for the next one. We don’t play Saturday so we will have some time to regroup a little bit. You can’t practice long and hard if you don’t have enough bodies. We have to find a way to put a better product on the court next Wednesday. The only thing I try to tell the kids everyday is you control your own effort, your own enthusiasm. You can’t control anything else. Secondly to that, I hold them to a very high standard to wear the uniform. Win or lose, we have to walk out of every building we play, whatever the score says, feeling we did everything we could to represent our school and program. That is the only thing I have focused on since all this happened with Nicky Wieben.”

Sophomore Guard Denae Stuckey

On their play tonight...

“I believe that for some reason we weren’t ready too play and we showed it on the court today. We just have to find a way to come together as a team and become more successful than we have been lately.”

On outlook of remainder of the season...

“I am not afraid; honestly I will never be afraid. We just need to pull together closer. We have to think of some way to win even though we don’t have Toccara Ross or Nicky Wieben. We just have to find a way to win with the players we have now.”
