Wildcats of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. Jacob Pullen of the Kansas State men’s basketball team and Marlies Gipson of the K-State women’s basketball team are this week’s Wildcats of the Week, announced Tuesday morning by the Kansas State Athletic Department. It is the third honor of the season for both student-athlete, as Pullen is the leading male honoree for the athletic year on the male side, while Gipson is tied with teammate Shalee Lehning and Lauren Mathewson and Rita Liliom of the K-State volleyball team for the most on the female side.

Sophomore point guard Jacob Pullen averaged 13.0 points in the two games last week, including a team-high 17 in K-State’s first Big 12 win of the season on Saturday at Colorado.


Against Baylor on Wednesday, Pullen scored nine points on 2-of-8 shooting, both makes coming from beyond the three-point line. He was also true on 3-of-4 free throws and tallied three assists.


The junior led the Wildcats to its first conference victory, a 77-75 win at Colorado in overtime on Saturday. Pullen scored his 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting (58.3-percent), including 2-of-6 aim from three-point range, while he also recorded two assists and two steals.


Pullen, who has seen time in all 52 games in his career, leads the team this season in scoring (13.6 points), three-pointers (40), assists (64), steals (32) and minutes played (28.9 per game).

Marlies Gipson, F, Sr., McPherson, Kan./McPherson


Marlies Gipson propelled the Wildcats to a pair of road wins this week and pushing K-State to the first 17-1 start since the 2002-03 season.


The 6-0 forward, started her week with her fourth double-double of the season and the 17th of her career with 11 points, 10 rebounds at Texas Tech. Gipson also added three steals, two blocks and two assists to her final ledger.


In K-State’s 59-50 win at Kansas on Saturday, Gipson tallied a new career-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting and also added eight rebounds. Her career point total of 1,123 now ranks 22nd in school history.


The Big 12 leader in blocks this season also tallied four blocks to push her season total to 67 and pulling within three blocks of the K-State single season record, which she set last season with 70. For her career, Gipson holds the school record and ranks third in Big 12 history with 238 blocks.
