Wildcats of the Week
Wildcats of the Week
Denis Clemente, G, Jr., Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Univ. of Miami
Clemente had 10 points in the win over Missouri on Wednesday on 4-of-6 shooting, including 1-of-3 from 3-point range with a team-high seven assists.
He then tied Michael Beasley’s Big 12 record for points (at Baylor, 2/23/08) in a single game with his career-high 44 points in the win over No. 11 Texas on Saturday. The junior went 13-of-25 from the field, including a perfect 6-of-6 from 3-point range and 12-of-12 from the free throw line. The 44 points tied Beasley for the fifth-most points in a single-game in school history, including the second-most in a conference game. It was also the most points by a guard since Askia Jones broke the school record with 62 points against Fresno State on March 24, 1994, and was the most points by a guard on an opposing team’s floor in school history.
Clemente, named the ESPN.com National Player of the Week, also tallied the most by a single player in Erwin Center history, surpassing the 43 by Texas’ Reggie Freeman against Fresno State in 1996, and most by a visiting player, surpassing the 40 points scored by Rob Williams of Houston in 1981.
Clemente’s previous career was 24, which he did twice as a sophomore at Miami (Fla.) in 2006-07 against Virginia Tech and Boston College. Clemente posted double figures for the 13th time this season, including his second 20-point outing, and has scored in double figures in six of the seven Big 12 games.
Loren Groves, Throws, Sr., Scott City, Mo./Scott City HS
Loren Groves recorded the Wildcats’ first automatic qualifying mark of the season as she threw a season-best 69-08.00 in the weight throw en route a title and a berth into the NCAA Championship at season’s end at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday.
Groves, a senior from Scott City, Mo., had already posted two NCAA provisional qualifying marks as she made a hurl of 68-06.50 at the KSU Invitational on January 17, which broke the meet record she previously held from 2007 and bettered her first provisional mark of the season, a 67-09.00 throw at the KSU All-Comers on December 13.
