Opponent Quotes

Head Coach Mike Anderson

Opening statement...
“Obviously, it was a different game than it was in Columbia. You have to credit Frank (Martin) and his team. I thought they came out and were well prepared coming off that loss; we were the first team to beat them in conference play so I thought that was an added incentive. We just ran into a buzz saw. Anything that we could do wasn’t right and everything that they did was right. I saw two or three free throws that hit everywhere on the rim but didn’t go in for us. When that is taking place you know it’s not your night. What can you say? Michael Beasley, there is no question about it; he came a lot more focused for this particular game. Credit has to go to them, but of course we didn’t play particularly well. I thought our kids continued to fight. Whether it is one or 30 (points), it’s still a loss.”

On how good Beasley was tonight...

“I thought he was good. I thought early on we were boxing him out and that kind of got him going. Tonight, there is no question about it, he played exceptionally well. Some of that is because we didn’t do a very good job, but obviously he is a very good basketball player. He’s done that not only to our basketball team but to quite a few other teams in the country.”

On K-State’s defense...

“Compared to when we played them earlier, I thought they were a little bit more focused this time. Then again, we had 24 turnovers and that’s the highest we’ve had all year long. They weren’t just taking it from us - I thought we made some bad decisions, but I thought defensively they did a good job. It seems like they are only going to give you one shot, so if you’re going to get a shot then you better get a good one.”

Junior Guard Matt Lawrence

On tonight’s game...

“You have to credit to Kansas State. We came back on them back at our place and it wasn’t going to happen this time. This time they got their lead and then we tried to chip away in the second half and they kind of stepped on our neck. They have some good players and they shinned tonight.”

On Michael Beasley’s play...

“He’s probably the toughest player that I’ve ever seen play. He has a great heart for the game of basketball. He’s a man out there.”

On playing at Mizzou Arena, compared to Bramlage Coliseum...

“It’s a lot easier, especially when you have your fans and support behind you, sticking with you even though we got behind by 16 at our place. It’s tougher out here. It’s hard to go down by 20 at someone else’s place and expect to gain energy and get stops when they’re in flow. They carried that they whole game.”

Freshman Forward Justin Safford

On Beasley’s play...

“He’s a heck of a player. It seemed like anything we did, we couldn’t stop him. He was getting to the free throw line; I don’t think he missed one free throw. He’s just a dominate player and you could see that tonight.”
