Iowa State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Greg McDermott

On the toughness of K-State’s defense ...

“They were tough at both ends of the floor. The first half we didn’t do a good enough job taking care of the basketball. I felt like we played better than the score was at halftime (20-22 K-State). I felt that we played well enough defensively in the first half to have the lead. They are a good defensive team. They are much stronger than we are, much more physical than we are. The combination of the turnovers in the first half and the slow start for us defensively in the second half was really the difference in the game.“

On the match up with David Hoskins...

“It was a difficult match up because he is powerful enough that if you try to guard him small he has got enough quickness to run you down to the block and he has enough sureness with his ball skills around the perimeter that he can take it at a bigger guy on the perimeter. He just shoots that perimeter shot well enough that you have to respect it. Our big guys are really not built to defend that.”

On Kansas State’s chance to go to the NCAA Tournament...

“If they finish strong they have a chance. It’s my first time through the league and obviously it is a very talented league and there is nowhere easy to play. They have all the pieces, in my opinion. They are tough mentally and they understand how to play. Part of it is they have a lot of juniors and seniors out there and it’s obvious that they have played together for a while and that they have embraced Coach Huggins system and style of play.”

Junior Center Jiri Hubalek

On David Hoskins ...

“He is a good player. He does what he does well. He can score and make lots of plays. When I have the opportunity I made the effort on the defensive end against him. It didn’t matter who I had on me, I still had looks I just didn’t make as many.”

On how to improve for the next game...

“We showed that we can play basketball with everybody. But we have to play hard all 40 minutes. We have to learn how to get it done that is probably the main thing to work on.”

Junior Guard Mike Taylor

On K-State’s defense...

“It was pretty much like the first game. They put a bigger body on me. They were trying to not let me get as many touches or get the ball where I wanted it.”
