Wildcats of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. Mantas Silkauskas of the Kansas State men’s track and field team and Jalana Childs of the K-State women's basketball team are this week’s Wildcats of the Week, announced Tuesday by the Kansas State Athletic Department.

Male

Mantas Silkauskas, Combined Events, Fr., Kaunas, Lithuania

Mantas Silkauskas did not let go of his lead in the men’s heptathlon in day two of action at the ISU Classic winning the event with 5,406 points. The freshman’s point total was enough for a provisional qualifying mark as he bested the field by more than 300 points.

Silkauskas led after the first four events from Thursday and continued to build on that lead in the final three events. He began the final session of the heptathlon with a time of 8.12 in the 60 meter hurdles winning his third event of the heptathlon. Silkauskas finished fourth in the pole vault and second in the 1,000 meters to mark the win. Silkauskas led following the first four events of the heptathlon with a total of 3,104 points. He began Thursday by setting a new personal best time in the 60 meters at 6.83 seconds winning the event. His nearest competitor was nearly half a second behind at 7.21. Silkauskas also won the long jump with a leap of 23-03.50 besting the field by just shy of three feet and scoring 138 more points than the second-place finisher in the event. His shot put of 39-05.25 placed him third in the event. He also finished third in the high jump at 6-02.75 for 714 points.

Female

Jalana Childs, F, Fr., Orlando, Fla.

In her first career start, Jalana Childs tallied her first career double-double with career-highs of 14 points and 16 rebounds in a career-best 32 minutes of action to aid the Wildcats to a 79-71 win over Oklahoma State on Sunday in Manhattan. Childs, who earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors for her performance, recorded her 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and surpassed her previous career-high of 13 points against UTSA on Nov. 23, 2008.

The product of Orlando, Fla., registered the most rebounds by a Wildcat this season and the highest total by a K-State freshman since Shalee Lehning pulled in a school record-tying 20 rebounds against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 6, 2005.
