Kansas State Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening statement...

“After coming off of the Missouri game, this is a great home victory for our basketball team. It was incumbent on us to bounce back; I like the response in our basketball team. We had great minutes from Marlise Gibson and Kelsey Nelson. It was a very appropriate victory today to send the fans of McPherson (Kansas) and all the people that have supported Marlise home with a great performance. Marlise and Kelsey Nelson brought great basketball to the floor today, which was very important to our victory. We went with a smaller line-up today because of the matchups we had with Colorado and Kelsey Nelson answered our call in a big win. Every win in this conference is a big win and we are extremely happy to get another notch in the win category for Big 12 play.”

On what the team has learned with the absence of Shalee Lehning...

“I think we have found out that we are a team that really has to work hard and play with a lot of energy. I said this all year even when we had Shalee (Lehning) that we are not a team that is not dominating in any phase of the game necessarily. So, at the very least we have to bring intensity, work and play hard together. We have to have the individuals that play the major minutes on the floor step up and produce for us. Today I thought we had that, and I think our team continues to show great resilience and great mental toughness. It was not easy to come off a game like the Missouri one, but I thought we did a pretty good job today.”

On Kelsey Nelson’s performance...

“I think players and matchups go game by game. We are still trying to figure out what is going to bring the best to the floor on any given night and any given match up and tonight she (Nelson) stepped up. I wouldn’t go anywhere above her performance and I wouldn’t go anywhere under it, that is just the reality of today. I think our entire team brought the mentality that we needed to bring. Two game ago we had a freshman (Jalana Childs) in the line-up and she brought it. Last game no one brought it. Today Kelsey brought it and that is what we needed.”

Forward Marlies Gipson

On Marlies Gipson day...

“It means a lot, that they can have a game for every senior. Everyone from McPherson that came out to support the team, it just meant so much to me. It was really all that a person could ask for. It was a good team win.”

On the quality of passing without Lehning...

“No one on our team can replace what Shalee (Lehning) does. We all have to step up to be successful. It’s not about one person getting the ball inside it’s about everyone looking inside to get the open post. Whether it’s high-low or coming from the wing, I think our guards as a whole today did a good job.”
