Head Coach Rick Barnes
On what he liked and didn’t like from tonight’s game...
“I liked a lot of things. We got into foul trouble early. I thought we were a little too jumpy in the first half offensively. We had some turnovers because we were just throwing the ball around and turned it over too much in the first half. Defensively, we gave a good effort tonight. We worked through the foul trouble in the first half and I thought what Connor (Atchley) did in the second half might be as good of a performance that he has had since he has been at Texas. D.J. (Augustin), what can you say about him? We wanted to run more, but we knew that when A.J. (Abrams) picked up some fouls that (Augustin) would probably play 40 minutes. We did slow the pace down more than we would like to. Nonetheless, it is a great win for us.”
On defensive adjustments...
“Right before the horn sounded we went to box-in-one just for a minute. We told our guys that we hadn’t done that all year and we set up to put Justin (Mason) on him and try to let him bother him for a little bit. We did that and it was okay for a few possessions. Then we went to our man defense with Justin guarding him. Frank (Martin) was doing a good job of curling (Beasley) into the lane which is a hard thing to guard because he has such good hands. When Beasley catches it he puts a lot of pressure on you. After foul trouble, we went back to zone. The whole point of staying in the zone was to buy as much time as we could, trying to rest D.J. and Justin.”
Junior Guard A.J. Abrams
On his second half shooting...
“We are just taking every game as it is. We had a big game tonight. We can’t take anything away from
On Connor Atchley...
“He and I were in foul trouble, but I think we both did a good job of staying poised, and he does so much for us defensively and alternating shots. He also creates a lot of offense for D.J. and myself and the other guys out there with his screening abilities and talent to step outside and shoot threes. So he is a big part of our offense and defense.”
Sophomore Guard D.J. Augustin
On shutting down Bill Walker...
“We just played team defense. Bill is a great player and he just had a rough night. That happens sometimes in basketball. We just tried to help each other out and we played great team defense.”
“The guards really pressured the ball and helped out our big men as much as we could. I think we always do a great job against great players like Michael Beasley and those guys. It is going to be a tough task every night in the Big 12 and we just have to keep playing hard and try to get better.”
