Opponent Quotes

Head Coach Connie Yori

Opening Statement ...

“We played each other twice this year. Both games were close games that were for the most part, well played games, and unfortunately we didn’t come out with either of those. K-State is a very skilled team and a team that is very difficult to guard. We tried to guard them a little bit differently than the first time. We got lucky in a lot of ways. They missed some threes where some were open, some were not. They could have expanded the lead in a couple places where they had some good looks. I thought we fought really hard and I have a team of very good character kids. Credit to K-State - they did the right things and they made enough plays. When you play K-State you have to make a lot of good plays, too, because they are so effective offensively. Our 20 turnovers was a big factor. We didn’t utilize our possessions enough, but K-State is a good basketball team.”

On defending Kimberly Dietz...

“We obviously struggled defending Dietz. She’s an outstanding player, great leader, having a great senior year, and plays like a senior. She shoots the three so well and is so effective going to the basket. They are so good when they get the ball moving off of penetration. They did a couple things off screens that were effective. We got lost a few times and gave Dietz open looks, which are things we don’t want to happen. If we would have held her to 14, we probably would have won.”

Junior Forward Kelsey Griffin

On her game...

“I don’t know if it’s so much of a mismatch of my quickness off the dribble. Gipson and Sweat are both good defenders so it wasn’t really a mismatch. Coach Yori wanted to try my quickness as far as getting something going toward the basket instead of having to try to rely on a jump shot. K-State did a good job in scouting. They did a good job on help rotation throughout the entire game.”

On the difference between the first matchup and tonight...

“The first game was hard because we had a shot at the last second to even try to go into overtime. We defended a lot more today, but it was different things that hurt us this game. Our communication was really bad, as far as ball screens and transitions. The simple things we really shouldn’t have been messing up on is what hurt us the most in the long run, especially communication. In the first game, they were the aggressors, definitely attacking; not that they didn’t do that this game, but this game, we really hurt ourselves.”

Senior Forward Danielle Page

On Nebraska’s late game run...

“Yvonne Turner contributed a lot to that rally. She had a couple of shots and she was really clutch down the stretch. I thought when that happens, we just believe we are going to win, we got this, and it just didn’t turn out that way tonight.”

On playing a full game...

“We haven’t been able to put 40 minutes together. We show streaks where we’re a real talented team and hard to beat and then we show streaks where other teams can squash us. If we can put 40 minutes together I think we can be a really good team. We’ve just yet to do that this year.”
