Oklahoma State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Kurt Budke
Opening comments...

“First, let me say how proud I am of my team. Three games ago we were 5-8 and we had just lost to Texas A&M at the buzzer for the second time with 0.3 seconds on the clock. We went in the locker room and said, You know what? We can go win these three games.’ At Texas, at Nebraska and at K-State -- they’re all great teams. We believed in our team. We believed we could get it done. Three games later, here we are at .500. We feel like we belong in the NCAA Tournament.”

On their chances of making the NCAA Tournament...

“If you look at our conference and the RPI, too, we went 8-8. Especially this year, being in the South division, you had Texas A&M, Baylor and Oklahoma pretty much tied for first. So you had three great, great teams at the top of this that we had to play twice. We handled our business on the road, and we grew as a team. It’s a fickle business. I think Deb (Patterson) is a great coach by the way. If she doesn’t have that injury (to Marlies Gipson), we’re sitting here talking about them being in the NCAA Tournament, too. The luck goes sometimes in this thing. They’re a well-coached team, and they’re just that one player away from being right back where everyone thought they would be. There’s no question about that.”

On going 6-0 vs. the North this year...

“I think it’s got to be part of the factor. Again, we’re talking about Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas A&M are all legitimate Final Four candidates. Every one of them could make a run at it. We lose at A&M twice, we lose to Texas Tech at the buzzer, and we’re sitting here talking 8-8, and it could be 11-5 that quick. I’m very proud of our kids. They made some big-time plays tonight.”

Freshman Guard Andrea Riley

On the reaction in the locker room...

”Well, it was obviously happy. For us to turn it around from last year, we were grateful for how we played with heart. We were happy.”

On if Oklahoma State would make the NCAA Tournament...

“I’m so happy. I’m a freshman going to the NCAA Championships. That’s just one-in-a-million.”

On being recruited by Oklahoma State...

“I wanted to be a part of a rebuilding program. I wanted to be part of a program that I can go down as somebody who helped turn the program around. I just wanted to be someone that could help.”
