Kansas State Head Coach Frank Martin Quotes

On Buchi Awaji’s blocked shot...

“It was huge. He has probably played 26 of the 29 games we have played and I have said the same thing every time about him. He is great when he plays the way we need him to. He as grown tremendously. He has mailed it in, he continues to try and try. In a game like today where I am extremely stubborn and the last two days I have convinced myself that we need to play smart so that we can a better job with Nebraska both offensively and defensively. That kind of opened the door for him here today. It is like everything else in life, if you get an opportunity and you take advantage of it, then the opportunity gets a lot bigger for you. I knew it and the players in the locker room after the game knew it as well, he made a great play to help us win.”

On the defensive stand mid-way through the second half...

“We tried to let them recover. I think we gave them mouth to mouth to even help them recover. It is a special group of kids and that is why it is so fun to coach these guys. Coming off the game against Missouri, which was game that we obviously wanted to win but we didn’t play well and coming in here and playing the way we did, it was great. They came out in the second half and extended their lead but our guys never stopped and played hard to get back in it. Our guys just refuse to loose. I know that is John Calapri’s line but that is the kind of guys we got. Darren Kent sprained an ankle, comes back, makes a big time shot so they doubled him and that allowed Jacob (Pullen) to get open for the shot. Those are big time plays by a senior.”

On the post-season outlook for this team...

“I can’t sit here and tell you that we don’t want to be in the NCAA Tournament, that is one of our goals we talked about back in September when workouts started. The kids that are in that locker room tasted the tournament last year so it is something that is very important for us. With that said I don’t care what happens 10 days from now.  I’m just going to enjoy everyday that I get to coach these guys, because this is a special group.”

On what makes Nebraska such a tough matchup...

“Doc Sadler. There can’t be any one in the country that can get players to play better together and harder than he does. There are an upperclassmen team, guys that are older, stronger and understand how to play and he has done a great job with them. If you look at the places he has been, you can’t find a place where he has been unsuccessful.”
