Five K-State Student-Athletes Earn Lage Academic Award

Big 12 Release

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Five Kansas State student-athletes received the fifth annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement award, announced by the Big 12 Conference office on Tuesday.

The Conference's highest academic honor, this year's K-State recipients were Sarah Kolmer (Sr.; track & field; kinesiology), Brittany Long (Sr.; rowing; psychology), Kara Omo (Jr.; rowing; kinesiology), Erika Schiller (Sr.; cross country/track & field; dietetics) and Stanton Weber (Sr.; football; accounting).

In total, the accolade was handed out to 58 student-athletes from Big 12 member institutions with Baylor pacing the conference with 14 recipients - Iowa State had the second-most at eight, while Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and West Virginia each had seven.

The award is in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).

In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.

The Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award recipients will receive public recognition at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships.

Kansas State student-athletes had a strong fall semester in the classroom, as a total of 269 K-State student-athletes were named to the Fall 2014 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in an announcement from the league office on Jan. 20, 2015. The conference recognizes all student-athletes at its member institutions during each semester with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The 269 student-athletes earning the honor on Friday marks a new high since John Currie took the reins of K-State Athletics in the summer of 2009. This is the third straight semester K-State has placed over 250 student-athletes on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll. K-State has placed 200 or more student-athletes on the honor roll for 14 straight semesters.

Of the 269 K-State student-athletes earning the citation for their academic excellence, 39 registered a GPA of 4.0 in the fall semester. K-State ranks among the league's best in terms of academic success as it continues to set a national standard in terms of APR, as all programs are currently well above the required NCAA standard.

In the fall semester, 38 student-athletes graduated during commencement ceremonies in Bramlage Coliseum in December.
