Coach Frank Martin Quotes

Head Coach Frank Martin

On the performance in the first half compared to the second half performance...

“This game was our season in a nutshell. It wasn’t pretty, perfect, or scripted. It was about a group of kids that are resilient and just follow their leader in (Denis) Clemente. That’s what our season has been. We have had moments where people say Oh, they stink, they can’t play’ but these kids keep fighting and they are resilient. As draining as it is on a coach, it also makes it exciting to come in the next day and coach them because you know you have a group of kids that lay it on the line for you.”

If the pressure of Senior Day affected Darren Kent’s game...

“I don’t think it was that. I think he just missed a few shots and got down on himself. I thought he was real sharp as far as leadership and communication goes. Defensively getting players to the right places. The ball just didn’t go in and he hung his head, and when you do that as a player, the ball never goes in. He tried and I tell my players all the time, I don’t care if you never make a shot as long as you try you are good with me.’”

On the upcoming Big 12 Tournament...

“It is a great opportunity to go in there and play in a tournament format against teams that we have been competing against non-stop. It’s just a chance to compete against some great teams in a great setting. We have an understanding that that was one of our goals, to get to Oklahoma City and try to play in that last game. We have already dealt with the regular season, now we deal with the postseason conference tournament, and when that’s over we will worry about what happens the week after that.”

On what some of the goals were from the start of the season...

“Obviously the first goal was to win every game on the schedule. We don’t sit down at the beginning of the season and say, Well we can win one here, we can win one there,’ that’s not what we do. We go game to game trying to win each one. That was our focus to deal with the regular season. Competing for that regular season conference title was one of them, but we didn’t get there. I thought we fought as hard as we could to achieve it, now we go to the Big 12 Tournament which is another one of our goals. And then obviously post-season. When you get to post-season, all you do is you want to be in. Once you are in you are in, you don’t look to go to the sweet sixteen or final four, I think that is irrelevant. It’s about getting to the post-season and once you are there you have to go toe to toe and line up to play until your season is over.”
