Kansas State improves to 22-10 with today’s win over Texas Tech... The Wildcats’ 22 victories are their most since the 1987-88 squad went 25-9 and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Kansas State strengthened its NCAA tournament resume with its win over Texas Tech today... The victory over the Raiders (RPI 45 according to realtimerpi.com) is the Wildcats’ third of the season over a top 50 RPI team... No. 49 USC and No. 28 Texas were the others... None of the three victories came on K-State’s home floor... Today’s win also upped Kansas State’s record to 12-4 (.750) in its last 16 games.
K-State’s 66-45 win over the Texas Tech avenges a 62-52 loss to the Red Raiders from earlier this season on Jan. 8 in Manhattan... The victory also avenges a 73-65 set back to Texas Tech in the opening round of last year’s Big 12 tournament in Dallas... Today’s win by the Wildcats snaps a five-game losing streak vs. Tech... It is the first victory for the Wildcats over the Raiders since Jan. 11, 2003, and evens the all-time series at 11-11, including a 1-1 ledger in Big 12 tournament games.
Today’s win by the Wildcats improves Kansas State to 6-5 in its first game of the Big 12 tournament... It is the first time that the Wildcats have played their first game of the Big 12 tournament in the quarterfinals... K-State is now 2-4 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament with the win... Overall, the Wildcats improve to 27-28 all-time in post season conference tournament play, including a 7-10 mark in the Big 12.
Kansas State’s starting lineup this afternoon consisted of: seniors Lance Harris (guard), Akeem Wright (guard) and Cartier Martin (forward), as well as junior forward David Hoskins, and junior guard Clent Stewart... It is second straight game that this season this group has started together and just the second time all year K-State has used this lineup ... Harris has now started 27 games this season and has appeared in 90 straight games... Wright has started 41 games in his career, including 20 this season and 19 in a row... Martin tallied just his second start since Jan. 13 at Missouri... Martin has now started 73 career games... It is the 54th-straight start of Hoskins’ career... Stewart has started 21 games this season, including six straight... The group started in K-State’s regular-season finale win over Oklahoma on March 3.
K-State will make its first semifinal appearance at the Big 12 tournament since 1999 and just its second all time... The 1999 team defeated Texas A&M in the opening round, before upsetting Missouri in the quarterfinals, where they lost to Kansas.
Head coach Bob Huggins upped his impressive conference tournament record with his first win since joining the Big 12... He is now 31-9 in conference tournament games.
Kansas State made 33-26 halftime lead hold up for the 17th time this season... The Wildcats are now 17-1 when leading at the break... K-State’s only setback when leading at the half this season came vs. Kansas on Feb. 19.
Lance Harris finished with 20 points... It is the first time he has hit the 20-point mark since a 24-point outburst at North Dakota State on Dec. 9... It is his third-highest outburst of the season... Harris has now scored 1,002 points in his career and along with Cartier Martin marks the first time K-State has ever had two players cross the 1,000-career point plateau in the same season... Harris is the 20th player to reach the 1,000-point mark in K-State history.
Blake Young finished with 12 points and has now reached double figures in twice in the last four games... He had 13 at Colorado on Feb. 24 and now has seven double-digit scoring games this season.
Cartier Martin and Lance Harris each connected on four 3-pointers for the most ever by a Wildcat in Big 12 tournament play.
K-State’s 10 treys were its most ever in a Big 12 tournament game.
Texas Tech’s 45 points were the fewest ever scored against Kansas State in a Big 12 tournament game and the fewest scored by the Red Raiders this season... The loss snapped a 4-game winning streak for Tech.
Kansas State will meet Kansas in Saturday’s semifinals at 1 p.m... It will be the sixth meeting between the Wildcats and Jayhawks in the 11 years of the Big 12 tournament.
