Vermont Quotes

Head Coach Mike Lonergan

On his thoughts on the game...

“I’m proud of our team. I thought we did a great job competing. I’m disappointed. We had an 11 or 12- point lead, and we had some foul trouble. Then we lost our composure with some silly turnovers. I give Kansas State a lot of credit for their three-quarters court press and the traps they put on us. We haven’t seen that kind of pressure since we played Maryland earlier this year. We didn’t handle it well. We held the ball too long and made some silly passes that led to some easy baskets for them. I thought that was the story of the game. I thought Mike Trimboli had a great game. He had a lot of assists, but some of our shooters just couldn’t make the shots. Coming into this atmosphere, you have to really hit some shots. I’m really proud of our seniors. They’ve done a great job. I was really hoping we could reward that with a win and go on to the second round, but it wasn’t meant to be. We wish Kansas State the best of luck, and we hope that they can get to the Garden.”

On K-State’s crowd...

“I think the crowd really hurt us. Our five-second call on the sideline is where we tried to call a timeout, and maybe the referees couldn’t hear us. I’ll give the credit to the crowd. I think it’s a classy crowd, too. I’ve never had a crowd cheer for me after the game like that. That was pretty classy. It was so loud that our players couldn’t hear the bench and couldn’t hear us trying to get the timeout against the trap. Coach Huggins is obviously a great coach to put that pressure defense on us, and we didn’t react well to it.”

Senior Center Martin Klimes
On Vermont’s effort...

“I’m just so proud of my teammates. They all hung in there, and we put ourselves in a position to win. In the end, we just couldn’t get it done. I couldn’t be prouder of our year. We had a great season. I’m so proud of my teammates and the program, and all of them have a great future.

On K-State keying on Mike Trimboli...

“Our whole game plan was to get the ball inside. We thought we had an advantage inside. We got the ball inside, and a lot of our points came off of beating their press. It was easy lay-ups for me. I thought we had a good game plan and we stuck with it. The last five or six minutes, we just couldn’t score. They really stepped up their defense and locked us down. It was tough. We couldn’t handle it. We had a couple of turnovers that prevented us from getting the ball to the basket. Like I said, I’m really proud of my teammates and our team. Good luck to Kansas State.”

Sophomore Guard Mike Trimboli
On the 10-second violation...

“I thought I looked up and saw a 26, but I might not have been across halfcourt when I saw it. We just couldn’t make free throws at the end, and that’s what did it for us. He (Akeem Wright) was real good and athletic. He stayed in front real well. There was nothing that I could really do but try and get by him.”
