Wildcats of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. Thomas Rooke of the Wildcat baseball team and Petra Chuda of the K-State women’s tennis team are this week's Wildcats of the Week, announced by the Kansas State Athletic Department.

Male

Thomas Rooke, LHP, So., Spring, Texas

Sophomore relief pitcher Thomas Rooke went 1-0 and tallied his first career save, helping Kansas State win its first series over No. 15 Texas A&M since 2005. The left-hander combined to throw four shutout innings in his two appearances, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters without issuing a walk.

Rooke recorded his first-career save in the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader on Friday, just hours after Texas A&M came back to defeat K-State with a four-run eighth inning. Rooke entered the second game of the twin-bill with the Cats clinging to a one-run lead in the seventh after the Aggies scored a pair of runs in the inning. Rooke allowed a hit to the first batter he faced, but sat down the next seven Aggies to preserve the win.

In the rubber match on Saturday, K-State battled back to get within one run at 3-2 after each team scored one in the seventh. Rooke entered the game with one out in the eighth and a runner on first, but, after a caught stealing, the Spring, Texas, product forced Luke Anders to groundout to end the frame. Rooke did allow a base hit to Kevin Gonzalez to begin the ninth, who was sacrificed over to second. But Rooke forced a lineout and a groundout to set the stage for the Wildcats’ two-run ninth to win the series.

Female

Petra Chuda, Fr., Sokolnice, Czech Republic

Kansas State freshman Petra Chuda captured a pair of three-set match wins last week, as K-State women’s tennis ended its 10-match losing skid with a 5-2 win over No. 63 Nebraska.

Chuda opened her week with a 7-5, 1-6, 10-7 win at number four singles over Kunigunda Dorn of Kansas. The victory by the Sokolnice, Czech Republic, product ended a personal 10-match skid. The victory was the first Big 12 win for Chuda and was her first three-set match win since Feb. 8.

Not taking any time between victories, Chuda captured her second straight three-set match win with a come from behind defeat of Stephanie Evans of Nebraska at number five singles, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2, on Saturday. The win by Chuda clinched the match for the Wildcats and was her fourth 3-set match win this season. Chuda also tallied a doubles win against Nebraska, as she teamed with senior Katerina Kudlackova at number three doubles to help the Wildcats earn the crucial doubles point against the Huskers. Chuda owns a personal doubles record of 15-13 this season.
