Kansas State Offensive Player Quotes

Junior Quarterback Josh Freeman

On offensive play of the Spring Game...

“Adrian Hilburn ran some great routes in the one-on-one. Cedric Wilson also ran some great routes. The running backs really showed up today; Keithen Valentine and Leon (Patton) had a few good carries early, Frank Delarue and the rest of them really showed their stuff today.”

On the learning experiences during Spring practices...

“Leadership is a thing that we have been trying to learn from Coach Prince. As a team we are trying to develop a team full of leaders. Coach Prince said that when we were deciding to vote for captains, we want the type of team where you can come out and pick anyone and be the captain. We are really trying to produce a team full of leaders. As far as the offense goes, we are developing a lot of mutual respect from the offensive line to the backfield. It is more of an accountability deal than straight forward leadership; sometimes guys have to get going and we hold each other accountable.”

Junior Running Back Keithen Valentine

On no one knowing of him and now becoming well known...

“I came from a juco in Mississippi, Mississippi Delta. I’m from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I had a couple scholarships coming out of juco but I just wanted to come to this school because it was a good opportunity, they have a good team, good program and I like coach Prince and they gave me the opportunity to walk on and get a scholarship so I’m doing alright now.”

On Josh Freeman’s first impression of him squatting more than anyone else...

“I got a lot of stuff to stick out. They have good players here so I got to do everything I can to stick out.”

On what he was trying to prove tonight...

“I want to let the K-State fans know I’m going to be here to help the team, and that I’ll be here to help us win, I wasn’t planning on an injury, I hurt my ankle on Monday so I was toughing it out here. I got a high ankle sprain.”

On his injury effecting him tonight...

“It did but I had to show everybody that I could play.”

On his style compared to Leon Patton’s, and how they compliment each other...

“When I came in I had to learn the offense, so Leon pretty much helped me and he wasn’t you know jealous and he helped me a lot to make it easier for me, and we’ll be doing good to do the same thing they did last year with James Johnson.”

Junior Tight End Jeron Mastrud

On the offense not executing well...

its still disappointing, I think we should’ve executed our plays better, I fumbled on the goal line, that was a touchdown. I made a bad snap that was another three points and that’s ten points right there just on me alone, and with that we would have won. But offensively I felt like we did some good things. We were able to run the ball pretty well, for the most part.”

On filling the void left by Jordy Nelson...

“I think we’ll be alright, a lot of people are going to step up that maybe didn’t do as much last year. I’ll expect a lot more out of our other receivers and myself so I think we’ll be able to fill that void.”

Junior Running Back Leon Patton

On Keithen Valentine’s performance...

“A lot of people didn’t know about him. You don’t see too many people who work harder than him.”

On the teams running back position as a whole...

“I think it’s strong. We have a lot of guys that can do basically the same thing.  We all have speed and good rhythm. There’s not a specific person that stands out, we all possess the same abilities.”
