Incoming President Dr. Kirk Schulz Quotes
John Currie Introductory Press Conference - May 18, 2009

Opening statement...

Good morning! It is great to see such a large crowd to come out and meet John and Mary Lawrence Currie.

When we started the search for a new Athletic Director, I told people that I wanted us simply to "hire the best AD possible" - and that this was my sole criteria used my in selection of John Currie.

I wanted to find someone with a superb background in fundraising - someone with an outgoing personality who would be at home talking with our fans in western Kansas or in Kansas City - someone with a great deal of personal integrity and experience with major college athletics but most importantly - someone who really wanted to be at Kansas State University.

John and I share roots in the Southeastern Conference - and I can attest first hand to the outstanding athletic program at the University of Tennessee. John has been an integral part of the success of the UT sports program - and I know that he will bring the same boundless energy, enthusiasm, visions, and success to Kansas State University.

John also brings a strong commitment to a "total sports" program at K-State - and I want to be sure that we are putting the appropriate resources in place so that all of our student-athletes and coaches are in a position to compete for Big 12 championships in all sports.

I would like to thank Amy Button Renz, President and CEO of the Alumni Association, for her outstanding leadership of the AD search committee. In our final applicant pool, we had outstanding candidates from all of the major conferences, and a great mix of sitting athletic directors and Associate AD's interested in leading the K-State athletic program. I simply had to come in at the end and select from a truly outstanding set of final candidates - which is why we are here today.

As K-State's next President, I also want to be sure that we operate in a transparent fashion to our fan base, our supporters, and the State of Kansas. With this spirit in mind, we have copies of John's contract for anyone who would like a copy. I want to pledge to the K-State family that we will use our resources wisely - and will focus our energy on building a K-State athletics program that is not only the envy of the Big 12 - but of the country.

Finally, one of my principles of leadership is to hire the best people and let them do their jobs to best of their abilities. As such, my expectations are that John Currie will have complete freedom and flexibility to manage and lead our athletic program, much as I would hope our provost would lead our academic program. John will be a member of the President’s cabinet and will be an integral part of our leadership team that looks to move Kansas State towards the future.

On why he chose John Currie as the 15th Director of Athletics...

“I was looking for somebody that would energize the public and that people would look at and say I want to meet the next athletic director at Kansas State, I want to get to know him and find out a little bit about what his vision is for K-State Athletics.’ When I sat down with John during the interview and saw that energy and enthusiasm, I said you know what, he’s going to make people say, I’m going to make that home opener now.’ That’s what we really want to do is have people go home and say I love the leadership team we have at Kansas State. I think they’re going to make great things happen.’ ”
