A Letter from AD John Currie - May 31

Dear Wildcat Nation,

Good morning from Manhattan!Let me start by wishing all K-Staters a safe and meaningful Memorial Day‬‪– certainly all of us are grateful for the service and sacrifice through the years of all our servicemen and women ... and their families. ‬ ‪ ‬‪

Last month I had the opportunity to speak to the great kids at Fort Riley Middle School. About 60% of those 6th, 7th and 8th graders have a parent deployed overseas! Keep them all in your thoughts and prayers not just today but every day.

Tomorrow, I am heading down I-70 to Kansas City for the Big 12 annual meetings and there are several items I want to share with you before I hit the road.

First, in just a few hours we will learn the post-season destination of Coach Hill's No. 25-ranked Wildcat baseball team, which finished the regular season in 3rd place in the Big 12.

Congratulations to sophomore center fielder Nick Martini, who was named Big 12 Player of the Year! For K-State to have three category player of the year awards in two seasons is a true testament to the job Coach Hill and his staff are doing.

This past weekend a number of our track athletes were in action at the NCAA regionals and we are very proud that five have advanced to next week's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. Good luck to Erik Kynard (high jump), Moritz Cleve (decathlon), Jeffrey Julmis (110 hurdles), Martina Tresch (3000m steeplechase) and Beverly Ramos (5000m) as they compete for national titles!

Our 2010 volleyball season is just three months away as the Wildcats' home opener is September 1. The team just returned from an eight-day trip in Europe that included stops in Budapest, Slovenia and Venice. Coach Fritz's team played top-level international competition while having a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience. Check out the “K-State Volleyball European Trip Central” page at k-statesports.com for photos, recaps and player accounts of their eight-day trip.

I am pleased to report that football ticket sales and Ahearn Fund giving are up versus the same date last year! Individual Wildcat fans help drive the success of all our athletic teams and we are looking forward to seeing you in Bill Snyder Family Stadium this fall – our six-game home schedule is one of the best in school history and Coach Snyder and our players need your support!

As a reminder, season tickets remain on sale. The North End Zone four-pack season tickets have sold out, but great seats remain in other areas of the stadium. Starting at 10 a.m., tomorrow, 750 special mini-packages are available at $99 from which fans can choose either the Nebraska or Texas games and pair it with a Bowl/Sideline level ticket for either the Missouri State or Central Florida contests. We obviously want fans to attend all six of our home games, but these packages are terrific deals and provide fans who can't commit to a full season with more great options. These packages are expected to go fast and are only available through June 11.

Single-game tickets will go on sale June 14, while a four-pack of tickets to the opener against UCLA can also be purchased for $99 from June 14-30. Visit kstatesports.com for all the information.

One of the most encouraging developments at K-State was the appointment this winter of former dean of agriculture Dr. Fred Cholick as the new CEO of the KSU Foundation. Dr. Cholick is a former student-athlete himself and we've had a great time already working together with the rest of the University Cabinet in support of President Schulz's vision for K-State.

This week's conference meetings in Kansas City will be surrounded by greater than usual media interest given all the recent speculation regarding potential conference realignment. I am looking forward to the honest and frank discussions we will have. We have much to be proud of as a league and I believe that over the next several years we can maintain and even increase our standing as one of the nation's premier conferences. President Schulz and I are working hard in concert with other league president and athletic directors to support Commissioner Beebe's initiatives.

Finally, be sure to check back tomorrow as we make an announcement regarding our football program and 2010 schedule - it is surely one that all K-Staters and citizens of the state of Kansas will be excited about!

Thank you for all you are doing to support K-State student-athletes. Enjoy a safe Memorial Day and...Go Cats!
