Board Reacts to Nebraska's Big 12 Departure

TOPEKA, Kan. - Today Board of Regents' Chair Jill Docking, of Wichita, issued the following statement regarding the University of Nebraska's announcement that it will depart the Big 12 Conference in order to apply for Big 10 Conference membership:

"Nebraska's announcement is disappointing.  The Big 12 is worth saving; this conference is among the best in the nation."

"It's not just the geography that defines this conference; it is also the emphasis on student athletes.  The realignment discussion must focus on the academic as well as the athletic success of our students.  As conferences expand their geographic footprint, student athletes will be forced to spend more time outside the classroom traveling across the country to participate in weekly athletic events - only contributing to increased fatigue and strain."

"Chancellor Gray-Little and President Schulz have been working tirelessly with their athletic directors and are weighing all the options in order to determine their best course of action at this juncture.  We continue to believe the best course for K-State and KU is joint membership in the Big 12.  We are in constant contact with our CEOs and athletic directors, and they will continue to keep us apprised of their continued discussions.  This issue is of paramount importance not only to our universities, their students and alumni, but also to our state."
