Athletics Successful in University Campaign

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State Athletics Department has experienced great success during the University’s Changing Lives Campaign as it has announced it has surpassed the $90 million mark for the project, which began in 2000.

According to Assistant Athletics Director Chad Weiberg, who is spearheading the fundraising for the department’s portion of the $500 million campaign, K-State Athletics has raised $92.6 million as of the KSU Foundation’s June 30 update, which is the largest amount of any other single area on campus.

“The Athletics Department is proud to be part of the University’s Changing Lives Campaign,” Weiberg said. “We are thankful to the thousands of K-State fans whose contributions have supported our student-athletes and coaches. Obviously, the success of our teams, our student-athletes, our coaches and our staff could not be achieved without this support.”

Included in the amount collected by the Athletics Department are contributions to the Ahearn Scholarship Fund and the Ernie Barrett Endowment Society as well as donations for facility improvements. From the first year of the campaign in 2000, donations to K-State Athletics went from $8.1 million to $16.8 million in 2007 and include nearly 10,000 first-time donors.

During the campaign, K-State Athletics launched the Ernie Barrett Athletic Endowment Society, raising over $6 million in cash, as well as more than $13 million in deferred commitments for scholarships, and also established the first endowed head coach position.

Facility improvements during the campaign include the construction of Tointon Family Stadium, renovation of the track complex, the expansion of the Vanier Complex as well as many other improvements across the entire athletics department.

“Our development staff has done a tremendous job in aiding with this campaign,” Athletics Director Tim Weiser added. "Our focus has always been to provide our student-athletes with the best possible collegiate experience and the contributions to this campaign will do nothing but enhance those experiences.”

The Changing Lives Campaign for Kansas State University is a comprehensive $500 million campaign that will secure funds for the purpose of moving K-State to a higher level of excellence and infuse those funds into virtually every dimension of the university, including student success, faculty development and the learning environment.
