Kansas State Head Coach Ron Prince Quotes

On the ability to slow down North Texas’ offense...

“We felt that we might have to give up something in order to stop (WR Casey Fitzgerald).  This was a quarterback (Giovanni Vizza) that threw for 2,400 yards last year, and we just felt that if the quarterback and wide receiver did not have a great game, then they could not score enough points to beat us by rushing the football.  Now, we have some work to do in that area because there were some things from a schematic standpoint that we need to (work on).  The objective was to come in and stop Fitzgerald, and we were able to do that.”

On the defensive play...

“I think one of the most positive things about the game is we played a lot of players tonight.  That is one of our objectives in these early season games so we can have that kind of playable depth late in the year that we might need.  We know that has hurt us in the past.  We want to make sure and handle that this year.  We are very happy to win and I know the players are as well.  But, we have plenty of things to work on going into game number two.”

On the effectiveness of scoring touchdowns in the red-zone...

“I thought Josh (Freeman) was fantastic tonight.  I thought he covered for the offensive line a bit.  We had some issues on one particular part of our line, and he was under way too much pressure tonight.  For the things that were presented to us, I thought we should have been better.  He made some great plays.  Cleary, being able to score red-zone touchdowns has been a big emphasis for us.  That is really what we wanted to do and I was very pleased with that.”

On the running game...

“Anytime a running back (Keithen Valentine) fumbles, that is not very good.  We have not had a lot of that, so we will have to address it.  We did not have a lot of yards for loss and that is important for us.  Logan (Dold) almost had a chance to score on the one-yard line.  Anytime you can have two kids run the ball, do a pretty good job, and have a good average, you have to feel very positive.  I think we have something to build on, but obviously we have things we need to improve.”
