Kansas State Head Coach Ron Prince Quotes

Opening statement...

“I tried to tell the players and coaches that I wanted to see the best quarter of football that we have played this season in the fourth quarter. That was my message at half time. That was my message before the game. I didn’t know how the game was going to turn out, but in this kind of situation when you have a little bit of a lead it’s natural to get a little sloppy and I didn’t want to see that. I wanted to see us play. I knew we were going to have a lot of backup players in and I wanted to see the best football of the season, and I don’t think we saw that. That was what we were shooting for. Overall I am happy to win the game, no doubt about that. There are some things we have to work on for sure.”

On Jordy Nelson’s play...

“Our game plan was to get the ball to him. Think players first and then plays. James Franklin was able to do a good job in getting the ball to him. It was a little choppy at times because we had a lot of things going on with down distance and that kind of thing. But we thought we had a good match up with him and we wanted to try to exploit it. In the end that was accurate and I was really happy that he was able to play and that we were able to get all this done and not be irresponsible in the fourth quarter.”

On red zone play...

“One of the things we wanted to be able to do was to be able to run the ball in the red zone. We’ve gotten the ball to the fringe area in the plus 30’s and 40’s. For the last two years we’ve had trouble transitioning into the red zone. Then once we get the ball in the red zone we just kicked a lot of field goals, so we wanted to commit to running the football and see if we could do it, and really challenge our players to do that. I thought that was positive. I thought overall on third down, it looked like we were 50 percent or just over. I was real pleased with that and in general the way the game went, we played a lot of players in the general conduct of the game and the game was still able to go our way. That’s what I was mostly looking for.”

On Missouri State’s offensive coordinator...

“I’m going to give a lot of credit to this offensive coordinator. I thought he had control of the game in the second quarter. He did a really good job minimizing our speed. He had us on our heels a little bit. He had a very good plan in an empty backfield set. He did a really good job of controlling the game with that and really keeping us on our heels. He almost hit us for a couple big plays. This offensive coordinator for Missouri State will be in our league very soon as an offensive coordinator. I think this guy is terrific. He has a great plan. He just didn’t have enough players and enough juice tonight to score the points, but this guy had a good plan and we really had to adjust to that. We were a series away in adjusting. That was a really good learning moment for us. We were able to come back and do some nice things. I thought our defensive guys did a nice job. I thought we ran the football. We were trying to get some turnovers. We were trying to get some tackles for a loss. We’ll have to go back and watch the tape to see how everybody graded out.”
