Kansas State Defensive Player Quotes

Junior Free Safety Marcus Watts

On the defense...

“We played well enough to win, but sometimes well enough to win is not enough. We tried to get defensive touchdowns and we knew that is what we had to do to get a win.”

On his interception...

“I just dropped out into the flat. He stared at the receiver and did not see me there. I took off, but at the end I just ran out of gas.”

On how K-State measures up to Louisville...

“I think we stuck in pretty well. I think we played really well today. We still have room to improve on special teams.”

On the relationship between the defense and the offense...

“It gets frustrating. Louisville’s defense is a very good defense. That is why we needed our special teams and defense to score to give our offense some help. We’re not going to worry about the offense. We are going to do what we do and that is play good defense.”

Senior Defensive Tackle Quentin Echols

On defensive play today...

“I think we are good enough, we could have held them to zero. The defense played pretty good, but not great. The thing that I am proud of is that nobody quit today. The defense didn’t quit. Our main focus is that we want to be tough and physical. On defense we just focus on getting the ball back. Whenever we see a guy, we always try and go after the ball. We always work on that in practice. We expect to get fumbles because we work on it.”

On where the team is at right now...

“We are still searching, but we know one thing no matter who we are playing we don’t quit. Thomas Clayton had a 69-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter when the game was already over. Nobody quits, even with two minutes left. Everybody on the sideline was jumping up and down and saying we don’t quit, let’s go out and play. I did see the fans stuck around too. They understand we play hard and they are going to be fans until the last play.”

Junior Cornerback Byron Garvin

On the play of the defense...

“We didn’t come out with a victory, but as a defense, I think we played exceptional. Our goal on defense is to hold the other team’s offense. That is what we strive for.”

On the team’s mindset after the first loss...

“We know what we are capable of doing today. They are one of the best teams in the nation and we have a great chance to redeem ourselves against Baylor next week.”
