Nebraska Head Coach Bill Callahan Quotes

Opening thoughts...

“First off, it’s great to be part of the 800th win in Nebraska football history. It’s a definite milestone and something that we’re very proud to contribute to tonight. We’re awfully proud of the way our players performed tonight. I give a lot of credit to Kansas State, they’ve got a very tough they’re a very competitive football team as you witnessed by their defensive performance. They’ll be a good football team in the future.

“Our defense had a stalwart effort today against their running attack, forced them into a one-dimensional game. They pressured the quarterback consistently and really forced them into positions that I don’t think they were too comfortable in.

“A lot of credit goes to our offense maintaining the running game on the road playing good defense and coming up with some big plays when we had to.”

On the defensive pressure on K-State’s quarterback...

“I thought our defense had a nice pressure package today. I think (Coach Cosgrove) had an excellent design in terms of attacking the quarterback I liked our plan. We came at them with a lot of different stuff. We forced them into a one-dimensional game, that’s why it was important to get a lead early in the game. To come away with a victory here is really key. Any time you play in this Big 12 North on the road, it’s awfully tough. We saw their best effort of the season today.”

On his team’s growing maturity...

“Anytime you’re having success it speaks to execution, which is a matter of focus and the attention to detail. That’s the biggest thing I see. I see detailed work being done in all phases of our game. For a coach that’s satisfying, but we’ve got an awful lot to improve just based on what we saw out there today. I credit Kansas State. They’re a good football team, they’ve got a lot of excellent athletes they played extremely hard tonight.”

On establishing the run game...

“We wanted to come in and establish the run. It’s imperative when you get on the road in the Big 12 that you run the ball consistently and you also play good run defense. For the last two weeks we’re proud of that factor. We’ve got to get better at it, but it was more or less the emphasis that we came in here with and I was glad to see us achieve that.”

On the fake field goal in the first quarter...

“It was such a huge play by Jake Wesch and Hunter Teafatiller two walk-on players that just made a great play. We had practiced this fake for the last week. I can’t take credit for it Coach Wagner, Coach Busch, Coach Watson, all designed that play. I asked them to come up with a fake earlier in the week and they said Coach it’s there this week.’ They put the design in, they put the structure in, we practiced it consistently all week, and it just happened to be that the ball was on the left hash for a right handed throw. It was just good timing. It couldn’t have been better timing. They were going after that first field goal to establish some momentum so I think we kind of diffused that somewhat for that first drive.”
