Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy Quotes

On the game...

“It’s a big win for Oklahoma State. It’s nice we could come through on Homecoming. We had tremendous fan support on The Walk, I think there were about 30,000 people. That’s what makes Oklahoma State special. I just want to give it up to our fans for the way that they come out and support our team.

“We played a good football game tonight. I talked Monday at our press conference about the kind of effort Kansas State plays with. It is a very well coached football team, and they played tremendously hard and they ran to the football. I think that was obvious tonight in the game when our backs or Zac (Robinson) would break through. It wasn’t very long before they would make a play. Offensively, they’re dangerous because they have two or three skill guys who are real fast and can make plays and their quarterback can run it, throw it, and run around and make plays. Their offense can be difficult to stop when you have the skill players and plays like they do.

On coming from behind to win...

“It’s a tribute to our team to come back with 1:10 left. It was a great call by Coach Prince, and a gutsy call on his part. I was very well planned to go for two. I mentioned to the team that we’ve come a long way as a group because with plays like that he takes the wind out of your sail as a team. We’ve come a long way as a football team, and I’m proud of them for that. The seniors are great leaders. It was a great victory for our university. It was a great victory for our fans. And it was a great victory for our team.”

On the physical aspect of the game...

Kansas State plays very hard, and they’re physical up front. We had some issues in match-ups up front on both sides of the ball, and we knew that all week. They move the ball on offense, obviously they had a big day with that. But our defense found a way to overcome that, and it was by forcing turnovers. We asked our players to commit to special teams, and we made a few adjustments. Joe Deforest made some changes this week, and I think we won the special teams battle. And Kansas State has been tremendous on special teams the last couple of years and probably the best team in the league this year.”

On Brandon Pettigrew’s touchdown...

“It was a simple play, and I’m just glad he caught it because the ball wasn’t thrown very well. The Kansas State defender had a chance at it, and I think he missed it and it went over his arm. Brandon kind of bobbled it and took off and then cut back. He has a unique ability for a guy who’s 6-foot-6 to make people miss in space. Then when he gets going down the sideline, he has the ability to lay it out and put it over the goal line because football is important to him. Some guys will say it’s okay to go out on the five-yard line, but he doesn’t think that way. He wants to score.”

On late minute victories...

“Mr. (Boone) Pickens always says, Your team is learning to find a way to win in the end and when you do that, eventually, it’s going to pay off.’”
