K-State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening statement...
“I think we feel very good about the fact that we were able to play everybody tonight and got some quality experience and minutes against a very, very good basketball team. Washburn is obviously transitioning a lot of players into their program. It’s amazing that coach does such a great job with his personnel. Anytime you play an established program like Washburn, you have to have your edge. I was pleased with the fact that our young people took the floor, and regardless of combination or their previous time on the court, I thought they were tremendous playing together. I like that we limited our mistakes. Our turnover numbers are very good. It was obviously great to have Marlies (Gipson) back on the floor. You can see what a difference she can make. I couldn’t have asked for anything more than six-for-six from the floor in the opener and eight rebounds. But, more than anything, I liked the ball distribution, our assist numbers, and taking care of the basketball early in the season. (They) are so important, and we’ll need to continue to grow from this point.”

On not subbing Gipson in late in the game...

“Well, there were two times I told her, Marlies, you are in.’ When she got there, one of my coaches reminded me of other minutes that we were trying to work that we really hadn’t attained. So it was kind of an instinct on my part. When I got my directive, I called her back. So like a good soldier, she came marching back.”

On what she wanted to see besides a win...

“Well, we really wanted to put an emphasis on quality execution, by and large, on the offensive end of the floor and just begin to establish a team defense we’re going to have to play. I thought we did that. I thought we defended well as a team tonight. We didn’t have a lot of major defensive breakdowns. We had two or three situations that I know we’ll learn from right away. That’s what playing against a good basketball team does for you. They play concepts, and there are things that Washburn brings to the table that we’ll see against other non-conference and Big 12 opponents. That was a big positive for us and something, again, for us to build on.”

On Jackie Stanley’s night...

“Well, I really liked the overall balance that she brought to the game. I thought she made quality decisions off the catch. I liked the fact that she also combined a good defensive effort with that tonight. She was attentive. She was focused. She really played to her responsibilities over the course of the game. She didn’t let herself get into foul trouble. I just thought she played a balanced and overall quality game for her initial minutes out there on the floor. I liked that she began to read defense as the game went on, and she and Ashley (Sweat) began to get some good post-to-post looks. (There were) a lot of positives from her first experience.”
