Iowa State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Iowa State Head coach Gene Chizik

On win:

“This felt so great for our football players and our fans.  The fans that showed up today to root for our football team, that’s what Iowa State is about.  Today we finally gave them something to cheer about.  I am just so happy for our players and our assistant coaches who have not let anybody or anything get them down.  I can’t be prouder of our young guys and this is just a moment where I feel like a proud father.  Realistically, probably less than 10 percent thought we could win today, besides the guys in the locker room.  They fought today and played four quarters and got it done today.”

“I think we’ve gotten better as a football team in the last three weeks.  The opponent in every week that we’ve played has been very good.  This league, top to bottom, is very good.  I think that it’s been long overdue because we have been getting better at things.  We’ve talked about the little things that kept us from beating Missouri and Oklahoma.  Those things that we talked about, I don’t think we did those today.”

On Austen Arnaud:

“We felt like Austen is healthy now and he could do some quarterback runs that he couldn’t do a week ago.  He led a great touchdown drive and it was good for his confidence and it was good to see him in there. Austen and Bret are both the same kind of quarterback, but one has a whole lot of experience and one doesn’t. We just felt like it was time to get Austen in there.”

“I was proud of him. He didn’t turn the ball over. He managed the team well.  He made some plays, made some throws and that’s what we’re looking for, guys that can manage the team and don’t turn the ball over.  It was big for him to be in there in big situations.”

“Not only was he in at critical times, but he delivered at critical times. I think that was great for him and for his teammates.  I think it was huge and I’m very proud of him.”

On forced turnovers:

“It gets the crowd into it and I think that was huge early in the game.  The defense made two or three back-to-the-wall stops.  We can’t win games if our defense doesn’t do that, and today they did.  I think Coach Bolt did a great job preparing our defense.”

On defense:

“That fourth-and-one was a game changer. That was huge.”
