Washburn Head Coach and Player Quotes

Washburn Head Coach Bob Chipman

On his return to K-State...

“I’m so appreciative of K-State playing us in this game. They can do so many things and to bring us in is really a no-win situation for us. You’ve got, my self, a former K-State guy and I’ve got a bunch of Kansas kids. And Kansas State is supposed to beat up on us. It’s a tough situation for them, especially since it is their coach’s first outing.”

On the play of his team...

I think the game at KU the other night was a really good get-ready game for this one. We played well in stretches and I was really happy with our effort tonight. We played so hard and we’re just trying to do what these big schools do and play hard. I thought our guys did that, so I feel great. I’m just happy for them, especially these Kansas guys to be able to come in here and play well. I’m not saying it’s our national championship but it was very important to us.”

Sophomore Guard Paul Byers

On Washburn’s play...

“We were just glad to be where we were. We missed the big shots late when we had some chances. But we were glad to be where we were at. We’ve got a lot to build on and we’re definitely proud of where we were. I felt like we played great tonight.”

On if their chances of winning...

“As early as the first half we felt we had a chance. We were normally up between seven and nine points. We were playing very tough. We came into half and said now it’s time to get serious. We have a real chance of doing this and it’s time to buckle down.’”

Senior Guard Michael Williams

On their chances to win the game...

“We thought we could fight them and play them close. I was hoping we would be put in a situation at the end of the game to win it. That’s exactly what happened by going into three overtimes.”

On the emotions of the game...

“Going into the KU game, I was nervous. I played at that level last year. But coming in tonight, I felt loose and relaxed. The pressure on our guards and our wings was a lot tougher than it was in the KU game. They [Kansas State] pushed up on the ball and extended out real high. They showed us off so we had to back door a little bit. They did some things that KU didn’t and I think we handled it a lot better. On Thursday night, we were a little out of synch but every guy in that locker room executed and played as hard as they could.
