Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Bob Huggins
On this game being a “wake-up call” for his team...
“I’ve said it a couple times it’s a marathon not a sprint. You get a wake-up call now if that’s what you call it three games from now we go through the same thing again. It comes down to doing the right thing every day. You have to do the right thing every day, you have to work every day.”

On David Hoskins and Cartier Martin...

“Dave was great. Dave is sitting in the training room with IVs in. Dave competes, he wants to win. I have to get Dave to try and pull a couple other guys along with him. Cartier didn’t make any shots, but Cartier hasn’t made any shots for two or three days. It wasn’t a surprise to me that he didn’t make any shots. You have to find ways to win. You have to find ways to compete. We didn’t run through any balls. We’re supposed to be playing pressure defense and we didn’t run through any balls.”

On Washburn...

“They did a great job. They really did a great job. They’re extremely well coached. We didn’t do what we had to do making shots. You have to find ways to win - we got out-rebounded. When you don’t make shots and there’s that many rebounds available you’re supposed to get them, and we didn’t get them.”

On not rebounding and the need to get better...

“We don’t rebound it in practice so I don’t know. The reality is we didn’t run any offense. Two weeks ago we ran offense pretty good and we’ve had some slippage. It’s my fault. I’m the one that’s supposed to take care of it so I’ve got to take care of it. It’s not anybody’s fault other than mine. I accept all responsibility. I’ve got to get them better find a way to get them better.”

On Chris Merriewether’s extensive playing time...

“We had some guys who put us in a position that we shouldn’t ever be in because I couldn’t put them in the game. They put us in a position that we shouldn’t ever be in, if you care about your team.”

On Clint Stewart’s performance and playing more than expected...

“You saw that he’s not in real good shape but Clint’s a good kid, he tries. We can’t consistently play some of those guys that many minutes, but again, we had guys put us in a position where we didn’t have any choice.”

On positives to take from the game...

“I think some guys understand a little better now that they have to do the right thing. They have to come to play, have to be prepared to play. If they’re not prepared to play they’re not going to play. If you’re going to lose games, why lose games with guys who aren’t prepared you shouldn’t do that.”

On what’s next...

“We’ve got to get better. We’re not getting ready to play the national championship game either, right now, we’ve got a ways to go. We’ve got to get better a day at a time, but there has to be carry over. The frustrating thing is you can’t move on until you learn some very basic things and there’s carry over. You can’t have game slippage because then you can’t progress. It’s harder than what sometimes you think it is.”
