Kansas State Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening Statement...

“It is a great place to have the opportunity to line up against a team like Emporia State. Obviously, (Ida) Edwards is dynamic and good who can really break you down off the dribble, which is a very potent combination. It is a basketball team that plays fast as they do a lot of dribble drives. I think it is good experience for our defense in particular to line up against a team that plays with that type of aggressiveness that Emporia brought to the floor.”

On Kelsey Nelson...

“I think she has been really solid and is a great positive for us as we establish a feel and rhythm out there on offense. Every possession we are all learning, I feel very good about her carrying over the momentum. I think she has a lot of strength through her game as she can obviously shoot the three. Coming off a season where we lose a player like Kimberly Dietz, you need strong play out of your wings and Kelsey (Nelson) is stroking the ball well. As we get a better understanding at the offensive end, I see good things just continuing to build there.”

On the shooting performance...

“I think our rhythm was a little bit better. We had a little bit better understanding of when and where shots were coming. We provided a little more offensively for our players to do than we did last game, which I think is another aspect of them being a little more comfortable with their three point shot. Our converging to the ball tonight put pressure on their defense and that helped our three’s get in a better rhythm.”

Junior Forward Ashley Sweat

On the difference between this year and last...

“I think that the older I get, at practices the coaches are more about take your time after the catch as you have so many open options with the way we play offense. It is not just like going to a spot that is open. We are allowed to play as we can improvise and that helps me a lot because that is the way I like to play the game. When you have a point guard like Shalee (Lehning) and a post player like Marlies (Gipson) who is so versatile, and especially when you have shooters like Shalin (Spani) and Kelsey (Nelson), it makes it a really tough offense to guard.”

Senior Guard Kelsey Nelson

On continuing last season’s late success to the start of this season...

“It all comes down to getting in the gym. I had a lot of things to work on and I still do have things to work on, ball-handling and getting my shot off quicker. There is always something that I need to get in the gym and work on and it is a matter of just going in there and doing it.
