Washburn Coach & Player Quotes

Head Coach Bob Chipman

Opening Statement...

“Obviously, they were a little ragged early in the game. They missed some free throws. The missed some easy ones that kept us around in the first half. I thought K-State consistently played very hard for most of the game, as they went after every ball on the board. I thought their defense put a body on us and wore us down and took us out of what we wanted to do. Coach Martin is doing a very good job there- getting his players to play hard. They got a little more comfortable in the second half and they started to look like themselves offensively. I think they are going to be pretty good. They are really strong on the boards and they were doing it legally by being so tough and so strong. ”

On comparison between KU and K-State...

“That is so difficult because they are two very prideful programs that are really trying to do the team things and really trying to win. They are a lot alike in that respect. I think both teams are evenly matched and it will be a lot of fun for the Kansas fans this year because it is going to be a heck of two great games. That rivalry is back and I really think they are going to be two great games. How is that for a political answer?”

On Kansas State’s talent...

“Jacob Pullen has a great pace and shoots the ball so well and was always under control. I was really impressed with his defense as he gave us trouble there too. All of their inside kids are physically strong. Whoever their strength coach is, give him a raise because he is doing one heck of a job as those kids are tough. It is the strongest I have seen. Their whole front line out rebounding and getting every board was very impressive.”

Senior Forward Paul Byers

On the physicality of the game...

“It is a rough game. You have to hit them first. You cannot wait until they hit you because you will end up out-of-bounds. We did not come in with the right mindset tonight thinking we were going to play against big, physical guys. We were not prepared for the inside game.”

On Washburn’s foul trouble...

“I am not going to complain that much about the refs. They had to do what they had to do. I did some stupid things tonight which I should not have been doing and I got myself in some trouble. It is hard to play in trouble against a physical team. They push you and you try to push them back and you end up on the bench. You have to stay aggressive and you cannot quit. I think that is what got me in trouble tonight. You get in trouble and you cannot quit.”

On Kansas State’s defense...

“They came out and their defense was pretty stiff at first. We got it going in the middle of the first half, but initially it was pretty tough defense as we did not get the ball reversal that we needed to in order to get our offense going.”
