Kansas State Coach & Player Quotes

Head Coach Frank Martin

On the rebounding...
“We have worked on it for a month now every day and we talk to our team about how important rebounds are. I don’t really remember a time where we got beat on the offensive glass. Our guys did a great job of putting a body on people and then the most important part which is going after the ball. That is what you have to do on the offensive boards, you have to work real hard and go get the.”

On Denis Clemente’s performance...

“He had a couple silly turnovers early which is not his deal. He took good shots they just didn’t go down. That little floater that he shoots is his shot. If he shoots that thing 10 times he is making eight or nine. He was a little wound up just like every player on team was.”

On the overall performance...

“We have been great in practice. We have a fun bunch of kids to coach. We kind of hit a rut there early where we were fouling and fouling is a bad defense play. Someone who fouls is someone who is in bad position or made a bad defensive play. It is going to fun. Fred Brown didn’t have a good day today. I probably jumped on him a little to much too early today. He has been doing so good compared to last year. He has showed so much growth. I got a little frustrated that he reverted to some of the things he did last year. I probably wasn’t fair enough to him today because of how good he has been in the preseason.”

On the offensive performance...

“It was ugly offensively in the first half. We took good shots they just didn’t fall and we missed free throws. What made it ugly was that we fouled every time which makes it worse, which didn’t allow us to get out and run and attack which is what we need to do. They forced us to walk the ball up the floor which is what they wanted to do since they were playing a conservative press after a made basket. I didn’t call any of our offensive sets today. We ran our motion game the whole time. I told my players that by Feb. 28 everyone in the Big 12 is going to know every offensive set that we want to run. It is no the play that you run. It is about the players within the play to have the discipline to score the basketball.”

On the execution defensively...

“When we execute what we have rehearsed for four weeks in practice it will work. They got three or four back door layups, which is something that we are going to have to live with when you guard the way we guard. We will live with it as long as for everyone they get we force them into seven or eight possessions to play the way we want to play.

Junior Guard Denis Clemente

On thoughts on the game...

“I was a little bit nervous because it has been about a year and a half since the last time I played in a real game. I think we played alright. We had a lot of stupid turnovers, but we are going to work them out this week and are going to be ready. I think we played hard offensively and did alright. I had a lot of open shots and I have to work on those, but I think I played well. That alley-oop to Jamar Samuels, once I let the ball fly, I knew it was going to be good. I still have to work on my defensive play a little bit. Earlier last week, I had a sore hip and in the first half, I started to feel it again. That is why I went off the court, but I am ready for the games next week.”
