K-State Head Coach Deb Patterson Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement...
“We’re excited about the win tonight against a very high quality basketball team. It was a tough opener but I was really pleased with the response of our basketball team during the week. The improvements that they made were evident in a lot of areas for us tonight, both offensively and defensively. It just feels good to open against a quality team like Green Bay and get the kind of win that we did. We’re looking forward to a quick turnaround because we’ve got Creighton coming in here on Monday and they’re an equally tough basketball team. It was a great win, a good team effort by our basketball team. They did a much better job in the work phases of the game I thought, as evident by the rebounding numbers tonight compared with the other night against Emporia State.”

On how the defense played...

“I really loved our defense in the first half. I thought we were a little bit on our heels the first couple minutes they got a couple quick baskets. But I thought our players brought great accountability in the first half. At the start of the second half I thought we got a little lax, maybe didn’t have the same pop and assertiveness that we brought in the first half. Overall, I was pleased. I thought we did a great job defending their three, defending their transition by and large. Obviously they’re the kind that can counter from all five positions off the dribble so you give up something to get something against a team like Green Bay. In the end we were doing enough on the offensive end to stay tight. I like how we dug in and got some critical rebounds down the stretch I thought that was as big as anything.”

On Shalee Lehning’s return to the lineup...

“I think it was significant in that it allowed our players on the perimeter to play to their strength. I think when you have one of the best two point guards in the Big 12 not on the floor it has an impact certainly. Tonight the minutes that we got out of her were good quality and more than anything I think it just puts our perimeters like (Kimberly) Dietz and Claire (Coggins) in a position to play to their strengths. That’s what you hope to do night in and night out. I think you saw that comfort level with our basketball team increase having that floor leader out there that they’re accustomed to having.”

On Marlies Gipson’s game changing performance...

“Marlies was phenomenal tonight. She was a presence, she was incredibly focused, very aggressive, and I thought she played with the aggressive intensity that’s necessary for her and us to be successful. It was really just a very balanced, highly intense game by Marlies. I thought she was as big a factor in this basketball game as anyone all night, on either team. To walk off the floor with that strong double-double and 13 rebounds is indicative of the mentality that she brought to the team tonight. I think more than anything she brought the incredible focus and the understanding of what she is capable of doing. She played a lot of minutes as well, so she had to be very tough minded physically and mentally.”
