UW-Green Bay Coach Quotes

Head Coach Kevin Borseth
On his team’s rebounding...
“They out-rebounded us. They got the second-shot opportunities. We always get out-rebounded every year. Look at our statistics. We stunk on the offensive end of the floor - no rhythm. They got 19 offensive rebounds, and we picked up 14. They got 47 rebounds, but keep in mind that when you don’t shoot very well, you get a lot of defensive rebounds. We’re the smallest Division I basketball team. We’re just too small to play at this level without being effective offensively, and that’s really what our game is - moving the ball a lot, getting shots in rhythm and making them. 2-for-13 from the arc for a team that can shoot? It doesn’t work very well that way.”

On his team’s offense strategy...

“We’re trying something new. We’re trying to get more people involved. That’s what we’re trying to do. Obviously 32 (Nicole Soulis) is our scorer. We’re trying to get more kids involved with some kind of consistency, and 42 (Amanda Popp) always scores. We just need more of those kids involved. That was our problem last year. We don’t throw the ball away and we don’t self-destruct. We shoot the ball well. We generally shoot it with a better percentage than we did tonight. We tried something a little new, and in the first half we just stood there no rhythm shots at all. You just dig yourself a hole. We actually out-scored them in the second half. I don’t know if we played better in the second half. We got some better shots. Even with that, we didn’t make very many shots. We played poorly.”

On Marlies Gipson’s play for Kansas State...

“She hurt us. We didn’t know where to help from because we’re so small. We don’t have enough big kids to block shots, and we get in foul trouble. We know which direction she turns every time - any videotape will tell you that. We played in front and got a couple lobs. We didn’t pressure the ball up top very well. For them, she was very big. She scored baskets when they had to have them. Gipson hit one shot with one second left on the shot clock, and she hit a couple of nice turnarounds in the lane, and she hit them at key times. On the other end, we missed lay-ups. We missed quite a few lay-ups a couple we didn’t have a chance to make. On a couple of them we have open ones and we just missed. You can’t do that against teams like this. We’re just not athletic and big enough to be able to self-destruct.
