Kansas State Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening Statement...
"I feel like we got better at some aspects of the game tonight relative to what we brought to the floor against Fort Hays State. I think we showed flashes of being able to get better during the course of the game. I think for a young team it is very important that we are continually stressing individual growth and improvement and I think tonight that is what I was most pleased about. We saw individuals make some positives strides and I think as a team on certain possessions down the floor we got better."

On the defense...
"Generally speaking we are inexperienced. We have players in and out of the gym for different reasons so tonight when our defense did become together and get a little more comfort level out there and an understanding of how the game requires adjustments. We started the game with a little momentum and slowly gained control of the basketball game. I don't think we are ever going to the team this year that jumps out on a team. We are going to be the one that has to find a way to manage it and tonight I thought our young people did a good job of doing that."

On the poor start to the game...
"I think we are the type of team that is going to have to feel the game a little bit and find a little bit more about our opponent. Early in the game there are situations that only through repetitions, adjustments, and experiences are we only going to be able to catch on to what is going on. I certainly want to shrink that because in Big 12 play that can put you in a hole really quick. In regular season none conference we do not want to get in a hole but I think we can learn from it. So I credit our team for being able to do that tonight."

Sophomore Forward Jalana Childs

On focusing on defense tonight against Pitt St.  ...
"We have focused mainly on defense  since our first game, but we got off to a slow start tonight. After we made the changes we needed to make, I think our defense was were it needed to be and that's when the game turned in our favor. As soon as we got our defense in place,  everything started going our way."

On getting better every day...
"I think since we are a very young team, including myself, we are learning new things every day. It is just a learning process during the game, too. We want to be perfect.  We want to get to a point where we are flawless, which could never fully happen, but that is what we are striving for in every game and in practice every day."

Senior Guard Kari Kincaid

On scoring 20 points in the game ...
"I know I will not score 20 points a game but I definetly feel responsiblethat if I have open shot, I need to knock a good percentage of them down. That is what I was fortunate enough to do tonight.  I got really good looks and I think that a couple of them were off of offense rebounds. When you get those extra-effort plays, your shot is a lot more in rythem. Its just a tribute to my teammates who worked hard and made those kind of plays, I just fed off of their emotion and their energy."

On the play of the three freshman gaurds ...
"All three of them, I think, really impacted the game tonight. Taelor (Karr) has kind of a knack for the ball; she goes and gets rebounds really nicely. Brittany (Chambers) does that too. I love our three freshmen. Everyday they are really willing to put forth the effort and that is all you need. They are getting  better and they are very talented. Each day I am definetly trusting them more with the ball and making decisions. They are going to surprise a lot of people this year. "
