Kansas State Coach Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach Bob Huggins

On the offense...

“We didn’t make any shots and we haven’t made any. I’m a firm believer in that you play the way you practice. It’s not that Cartier (Martin) and Dave (Hoskins) didn’t practice hard, they didn’t make shots. Lance (Harris) made shots in practice and, consequently, Lance made come shots in the game.”

On K-State’s shooting...

“They weren’t even guarding us. They were packing it down low so we couldn’t drive it at them. I thought we had tons of good shots.”

On rebounding...

“It’s better than what it was, probably, but it’s not good enough. We didn’t go rebound every ball and we need to rebound every ball. If you go rebound every ball, you’re going to get some. Our effort is too inconsistent. We don’t have a consistent effort in rebounding the ball and defending. We have to get better at sustaining things longer.”

On taking shots...

“When we scrimmaged Marquette, we made shots. I think everyone thought we had a chance then because Marquette is ranked 17th and we played pretty well, but we made shots. Dave and Cartier made shots. The game is easier when the ball goes in. Those guys in stripes didn’t like officiating that game today. It’s a lot more fun when it goes in it’s more fun to officiate, it’s more fun to coach, and it’s more fun to play. It doesn’t always go in, so you have to figure out ways to win when it doesn’t go in. We’ve been on a drought here. We need to start making some. I just think we missed some and got really tentative. I don’t want them looking over at me and saying is that a good one?’ If you have to ask me, it’s probably not. You probably shouldn’t have shot it. Just go play. My concern is effort and execution we have to execute defensively and offensively.

On making shots...

We’ve had pretty good shots. You shouldn’t have to hold the ball to win, I wouldn’t think. Akeem (Wright) probably had two or three shots from two feet in that he couldn’t hit the rim. We missed four lay-ups to start the game. You’ve got to make those. I think that if we make them, that gives us a little more confidence and we shoot it better. It’s a funny game if you rely on just shooting jump-shots, then it’s hard. I know when I played that if I missed three jump-shots, but got a steal, a goal and then a rebound basket, I’m saying to myself I’m 2-for-5 right now and not having that bad of a day.’ And if you miss five jump-shots and you’re 0-for-5 you’re saying I’m having a bad day.’ You probably wouldn’t have known that you were 0-of-3 on jump-shots because you tricked yourself by scoring some other ways. We don’t score enough other ways. We went to the half-court-trap when it was 18-7 and it chanced the game. We got the game going a little faster. We got the game going the way we wanted it to go. I didn’t really want to do that. I kind of wanted to work on us being a little more macho.”
