Kansas State Coach & Player Quotes

Head Coach Frank Martin

On the team’s performance...
“We played selfish, lethargic, and lackadaisical. I believe those are good public words. I’ll correct the problems in practice. You can be a cheerleader all you want on the sidelines but that doesn’t correct the problems. Problems are corrected in practice, not during the game, in practice.”

On the rebounding comparison...

“I told you that you would be able to see it on my face when we don’t rebound well. It’s pretty simple we just didn’t rebound well today.”

On the amount of players that saw the floor...

“I guess that would be the one positive, that a lot of guys played. I don’t know of anyone that played particularly well outside of about a three minute stretch. There was one point in the second half, I don’t remember the score but for a three minute stretch we decided to play the way we practice. Everyone guarded, shared the ball, and played hard as a unit. Outside of that I’ll try not to be a phony, publically or privately, it is hard to be positive after a performance like that.”

On when he noticed the team might be a little sluggish...

“I noticed it at the tip-off. I noticed it in shoot around before the game. I don’t lie to our basketball team. I tell them what I’m going to do and if they don’t do what I ask them to then I do what I’m going to tell them what I’m going to do. I knew they were going to be lethargic from the jump ball.”

On if playing two games in three days effect on the performance...

“I don’t think two games in three days had anything to do with it. Last year it did because we were a bunch of freshmen. I don’t know what it is but I’ll figure it out on Tuesday.”

On Fred Brown’s performance...
“Fred can make shots for us. When I said he reverted last week was because of the mistakes he made on the defensive end and the lackadaisical approach offensively. Today he made some shots. I’m happy he didn’t shoot three air balls like he did in the last two games but at the same time his approach wasn’t good. That is something that we need to change.”

Senor Forward Darren Kent

On staying focused after getting ahead very early...

“You just have to stay focused and stick to your principles and those games are ones to work on your offense and other things that you don’t do well, and that is the way that you have to look at them.”

On K-State’s performance...

“Looking at the stats and the way we played in the second half, we really didn’t play that well.  The rebounds were to close, the three point percentage was to good, and we really didn’t get to there shooters. We look at it now and we didn’t play that well. We need to fix some things in this upcoming week to get ready for our game on Wednesday.”

On bench players getting more playing time...

“Getting more guys more opportunities to go out there and help us win is good. Right now we are just trying to figure out what guys play well together and tonight we got to do that a little. Some of the guys got more playing time like Justin (Werner) and Victor (Ojeleye) which was nice and hopefully they can continue that in more of our games.”

Freshman Forward Jamar Samuels

On mass substitution...

”Coach Martin told us before the game that if we are not playing hard he didn’t care and would substitute all five of us. It was not a good feeling, but after he did that we started picking it up.”

On offensive threats on this team...

“Everyone, Darren Kent can come in and score at any time. Jacob (Pullen) and Denis (Clemente) give us a lot of offensive threats.

On shooting in the second half...
“I don’t think I even shot in the second half it felt like all I did was dunk. So I might come in the gym a little later on to get some shots. It is always a good feeling to get in the lane and score the ball.”
