Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

On the adjustments in the second half...

“Cartier made some shots. In the second half I thought our ball movement was better. I thought we played better together. I didn’t think we played very well together in the first half. I thought we shared the ball better. We screened and moved and cut better. We didn’t do that very well in the first half.”

On the play of the defense...

“Their guards are good. Their guards are good, but Steve Nash shouldn’t be able to take it from one foul line and shoot a lay-up at the other when there is nobody helping him. Without somebody stepping in front and helping him. We got too man-conscious. We really did a pretty good job teamed up defensively at Rutgers, but we couldn’t score so we came back and really tried to work hard on our offense. I think we didn’t do the repetitive things as much defensively and we weren’t as good defensively. And they made shots, they’re going to make shots because they’re good players. But we’ve got to make them make harder shots than a lot of the ones they made.”

On getting to the rim more...

“We’ve got to get the ball at the basket more. Our post guys are so young and quite frankly we just don’t pass it very well. We’ve got to get a lot better at passing the ball. We have to find a way to put pressure on the rim and you don’t always have to do that by posting a guy. You can put pressure on the rim in a variety of ways. So, we’re going to have to do a better job and continue to do a better job. We’ve got to get to the foul line. If you look at what Duke has done. Duke has made more opponents than their opponents have made for the last 10 or 12 years.”

On the play of Cartier Martin...

“Well, he needs to start making some shots. And he did, he made the shots that he ought to make. I want Cartier to be a player though, I don’t want Cartier just to make shots, I want Cartier to be a player. I want Cartier to rebound the ball. Cartier had one defensive rebound coming into this game, for the year. I want him to be a player. I want him to rebound for us, I want him to guard, I want him to pass. I want him to understand how to play. That’s my goal for all of them, is to learn how to play and learn how to be a better player.”

On Monday’s game at New Mexico...

“I don’t particularly want to go either. But, we have to do that. They’re trying to play fast, a lot faster. And they’ve got good players. They got a transfer from Penn State that led the Big Ten in rebounding. They got a transfer from KU and they got some other transfers that are good and they’ve got some other players that aren’t transfers. They’re playing a lot of people. We’re not good enough to just go anywhere and say This is what we do and we’re going to beat you at it.’ We hope to get there when we can do that, but we’re not there. So, we’re going to have to make adjustments and we’re going to have to change things. We’re going to have to figure out how to win games. We can’t let people do what they’re really good at doing. We’ve got to figure out a way to make them do what they’re not really good at doing and I’m not sure how to do that yet. Hopefully we’ll figure it out.”
