Kansas State Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening Statement...
"I am proud of the improvement that our team brought to the floor tonight. Washington State is a high quality Pacific 10 team. It was just great to see us get the ball to Ashley Sweat to get her involved that was very key for us tonight. We had great minutes off the bench from Brandy Brown and Mariah White. It was a good team effort and I think we improved in some areas, but obviously there is some areas that we can continue to grow. I like the way we fought and our response to the last game we played. Washington State's perimeter guards are lightning quick and if they get in open space it is scary what they can do. This was just a really good win for us after losing the first two games."

On Ashley Sweat's performance...
"It has taken us a little time to figure out where her touches were going to come from and it was important for us they way she stepped up and played aggressively by making herself available to the ball. I thought we played very well as a team tonight. Ashley's aggressiveness on the boards was very big for us as well. I didn't know I even gave her a break but I guess she sat for two minutes. Her performance was big and it solidified everything for us tonight. That is the caliber of player she is capable of being. At the same time I think the people around her were making better decisions so that made it easier for her to get the ball."

On the performance towards the end of the first half...
"We played very accountable to our scheme. We wanted to play better against penetration, at least better than we have been playing against it in the first two games. We started to communicate better as well. In the second half we wasted a lot of possessions offensively but we will grow in that area. We had some trouble against their press but nothing that happened tonight is something that we can't fix later on down the road. We will look at the film and I think our players are responding well to what they see on video. Basically on defense we were more accountable to scheme."

On playing well against Washington State again this season...
"That's funny because when their coach was coming through the line she said, 'Man, you must have our number.' My team just did such a good job getting me the ball tonight. You see some of those passes Mariah (White) made and you see those flashes of how good they're going to be the older that they get. I just think that as a unit, we played so much better than we had, and that's really big heading out on the road on Monday."

On practice this week...
"I think we were just trying to play intense and work on our rebounding a lot. We were still outrebounded by three, but I think, by and large, our box-outs and things like that were just much better, and we were much more aggressive going to the boards. You see Kari (Kincaid) and Brittany (Chambers)with five rebounds each, and those are great numbers for guards for rebounds. I think it takes us a little while and we've got to get over that three minute hump at the beginning of the game where we let them score nine points. I think as a unit, we are still trying to find our groove. I think we found it in little bits and pieces tonight and you could see those flashes of when we do play together, we can be very good."

On taking charge offensively
...
"Tonight, I didn't really think about taking charge offensively. When you have a player play the way Ashley played tonight, I was looking to get her the ball. My points just kind of came. One of them was after Ashley went for a rebound after a shot and it fell right into my hands, so it was her hard work that led me to an easy layup and the rest were free throws. I definitely knew that if we stayed aggressive  we would get free throws because we were in the bonus and that was something Ashley and I can bring, especially in the last couple of minutes when the game is close and really intense."
