Iowa State Coach Quotes

Iowa State Head Coach Gene Chizik

Overall thoughts...

“I think the game came down to a lot of things. We get a stop early on in the third quarter and then we turn around and cannot do anything with it. That has kind of been the thing all year. I think we had opportunities offensively as we moved the ball up and down the field, but we had to score more. Defensively, we got a couple of key stops but not enough. That is a really good offense. (Josh Freeman) was throwing the ball great tonight and we could not get any pressure on him. Even when we had guys in the right spots, their receivers would make great plays. It was a tough night as they have a great offense.”

On using this year as a building block for the future...

“I think you take what you did well during the year and build upon that. You also take what you didn’t do well and try to correct those mistakes. We have a lot of that to do everywhere so we will review this year and try to get better next year.”

On WR R.J. Sumrall scoring on the last play of the season ...

“I think it was really fitting for our whole team. I thought that it was a message showing we battled and never quit. Even when things didn’t look great, we fought and battled through. It was very fitting for the end of his (Sumrall) career. He has battled through many things and I think it is a fitting way to end.”

On Iowa State’s running game...

“We felt like we have been getting better running the football. So we started out and ran it pretty well. In every game we want to be able to run. Obviously when it is working, you keep calling it up so we kept running it (19 straight plays).”

On his thoughts of Ron Prince...

“Ron (Prince) is a friend of mine and I wished him luck and the best. He will do fine as he is a great football coach. He will move on and have a great career as he is still young with a lot of time to coach. He loves coaching, he loves kids and he will do a great job somewhere.”
